Men’s Soccer Defeats UConn, 2-0, In Opening BIG EAST Tilt

Paulo Lima and Gevork Diarbian score for the Friars.

STORRS, Conn. – The Providence College men's soccer team topped the UConn Huskies, 2-0, in their BIG EAST opener in Storrs, Conn. Junior goalie Rimi Olatunji (Brampton, Ontario) captured two saves and the win marked his second career shutout. This was the first BIG EAST game against UConn since October 27, 2012 where the Friars lost on the road, 2-0.

GAME FLOW & NOTES 
- In the 13th minute, Providence was fouled in the box. Paulo Lima (Lisbon, Portugal) converted on the penalty and gave the Friars an early 1-0 lead. This marked Lima's first goal of the season. 
-Olatunji made his first save after 33 minutes of play, 
-Gil Santos (Parede, Portugal) gave Providence a chance to extend its lead in the 37th minute. Santos headed the ball near the right post where keeper Jahmali Waite made the save. 
-In the final five minutes of the first half, Christopher Roman (Glastonbury, Conn.) beat the defender into the box and shot into the lower right of the net. UConn goalie made the crouching save. 
-Providence made three shots in the first half which were all on goal. 
-Gevork Diarbian (Cranston, R.I.) scored his second career goal in the 61st minute. Santos passed the ball ahead to Diarbian where he skipped the ball into the net from 8 yards out. 
-The Friars continued to control in the second half. They held the advantage in shots (9-7), shots on goal (7-2) and corner kicks (6-1).

1-0 – (PC) /1st  – Paulo Lima – Lima scored off a penalty kick. 
2-0 – (PC)/2nd – Gevork Diarbian (Santos) – Santos found Diarbian on the run where he scored with his right foot.
