Women's Basketball Falls To Villanova In Overtime, 63-58

Mary Baskerville recorded a double-double on 19 points and 12 rebounds.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team lost in overtime to Villanova, 63-58 on Feb. 24 in Providence, R.I. Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) paced the Friars with 19 points and 12 rebounds. This marks her fifth double-double of the season. The Friars fell to 6-12 overall on the season (4-9 BIG EAST), while the Wildcats improved to 14-4 overall (9-4 BIG EAST).
 
FIRST QUARTER:
• The Friars scored five-straight points to open the game, forcing a Villanova to call timeout with 6:55 showing on the clock. 
• The Wildcats missed their first five shots from the field before hitting their first field goal at the 6:36 mark (5-2).
Sophia Widmeyer (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) drilled a three on the Friars' next possession to go ahead 8-2, but Villanova answered with an 8-0 run to take a 10-8 lead.
Kyra Spiwak (Arlington Heights, Ill.) halted the Cats' run with a three and Baskerville followed with a lay-up at the left block to put Providence back on top (13-10) with 2:25 remaining in the quarter.
• Providence took a 13-12 lead into the break after Maddy Siegrist finished the scoring on a give-and-go for Villanova.
• Baskerville led the Friars with five points and four rebounds in the opening 10 minutes.
 
SECOND QUARTER:
• A 7-0 run gave the Wildcats a 21-17 lead forced a Providence timeout with 6:35 on the clock.
Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) got the Friars back on the scoreboard out of the break (21-19).
• 'Nova extended its run to 10-2 after Geary's bucket (24-19).
• Providence went scoreless for 3:26 before Lauren Sampson (Waltham, Mass.) converted a lay-up at the buzzer after a Baskerville steal.
• Baskerville paced the Friars with nine points and seven rebounds, and added two blocked shots, one assist and one steal in the first half.
• Siegrist paced Villanova with eight points and four rebounds.

THIRD QUARTER:
  • Providence forced a turnover on three of Villanova's first four possessions but was not able to capitalize.
  • The Friars made it a one possession game on three occasions and finally pushed ahead on a Grace Efosa (Lawrence, Mass.) layup with 4:02 remaining. This marked the first Friars' lead since 7:10 in the second quarter.
  • Providence outscored Villanova, 19-8, in the quarter to take a five-point lead into the final frame (42-37)
  • Baskerville, Geary and Spiwak scored five points each in the quarter.
  • Providence shot 50-percent (7-14) from the field, 33.3-percent (1-3) from deep and 50-percent (4-8) from the line in the quarter. Villanova struggled, shooting 27.3-percent (3-11), 20-percent (1-5) from deep and 50-percent (1-2) from the line.
  • Providence caused seven Villanova turnovers in the quarter and converted them into six points.
 
FOURTH QUARTER:
  • Williams' drive and score in the lane gave the Friars their largest lead of the game, with 6:15 remaining (46-37).
  • The Wildcats responded with a 5-0 run to pull back within four (46-42).
  • Villanova's Garzon hit a three-pointer from the top of the key with 3:47 to pull the Wildcats to one (48-47).
  • Williams' had a timely tie-up with 1:16 remaining as Villanova's Siegrist was driving to the hoop. In the Friars' offensive possession that followed, Williams took a drive from the right wing to put the Friars up four (53-49) with 46.9 remaining.
  • Spiwak hit one of two free throws with 35-seconds left to make it a five-point advantage for Providence (54-49), before Bella Runyan hit a three to get the Cats within two (54-52).
  • Williams was fouled with 13-second left and had an opportunity to make it a two possession game with a four-point lead, but missed the first of two free throws (55-55).
  • Villanova's Siegrist hit a deep step-back three-pointer to tie the game with 6.1 seconds remaining (55-55).
  • The Friars called a timeout to advance the ball but were called for a five-second violation on the ensuing inbounds play and were never able to attempt a shot for the win.
  • The game was tied 55-55 at the end of regulation.
  • Siegrist scored 11 of the Wildcat's 18 points in the quarter.
  • Williams had seven of the Friars 13 points in the fourth quarter.
 
OVERTIME:
  • Siegrist scored the first bucket in overtime on a layup with 3:41 remaining (57-55).
  • Villanova's Brooke Mullin split a pair of free throws to put the Wildcats up four (60-56).
  • Baskerville scored a layup with 12 seconds remaining to pull the Friars back within two (60-58). This marked the Friars first made field goal of the overtime period.
  • Villanova went on to win, 63-59.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Baskerville recorded her 46th double-digit scoring game, 22nd double-digit rebounding game and 17th double-double of her career. The junior ended with 19 points and 12 rebounds, her fifth double-double of the season.
  • Geary and Spiwak cracked double figures. Geary finished the day with 11 points on 4-8 shooting and Spiwak added 10 points.
  • Williams registered nine points, six rebounds and five assists.
  • Providence shot 23-61 (37.7-percent) from the field, including 3-11 (27.3-percent) from three, and 9-18 (50-percent) from the line. 
  • Villanova out-rebounded the Friars, 49-38.
  • Providence forced 20 Villanova turnovers and turned them into 21 points.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will conclude the regular-season schedule on Saturday, Feb. 27 against DePaul. The game will be played at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to tip-off at 1:00 p.m.
