KINGSTON, R.I. - The Providence College swimming and diving programs competed in the three-day Harold Anderson Invitational hosted by the University of Rhode Island from Nov. 19-21. The men's swimming and diving team finished second with a score of 792.5, while the women's swimming and diving team finished fifth with a score of 481.5.
The men's program set school records in the 200-yard freestyle relay and 200-yard medley relay. The quartet of
Brian Cantin,
Aidan Hughes,
McGovern Brown and
William Layden set the PC record in the 200-yard freestyle relay and placed first with a time of 1:22.45. Cantin, Hughes,
Ryan Sharp and
Kevin Hood combined for a school record in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:31.97. Hughes finished second in the 200-yard backstroke and set a school record with a time of 1:49.66, while Layden set a school record in the 100-yard freestyle, clocking in at 45.93.
The women's program claimed a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay as
Sally Alrutz,
Jennifer Bankes,
Courtney Reilly and
Taylor Loud combined for a time of 1:36.80. Alrutz also earned a victory for the Friars in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.09.
In total, 11 student-athletes qualified for the BIG EAST Championships this weekend, joining the 38 student-athletes that have previously met the qualifying standard in their specialty events.
