No. 18 Providence College Falls To No. 7 Georgetown In The BIG EAST Title Game

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The No. 18 Providence College men's soccer team fell to No. 7 Georgetown in the 2021 BIG EAST Championship Game, 2-1, in overtime on Nov. 14 in Washington, D.C.

GAME FLOW
• Georgetown nearly took a 1-0 lead just 48-seconds into the match as Will Sands found Stefan Stojanovic in the middle of the box. Stojanovic laced a low shot just wide of the right post.
• Gevork Diarbian had the Friars' first look at goal just inside the 16, but his attempt was saved by Giannis Nikopolidis.
• Simon Triantafillou chipped a ball into the six-yard box to 6-foot-7-inch Davis Smith in the 22^nd minute, but Smith's head was saved by Nikopolidis.
• Lukas Burns made two clutch saves in the 28^th and 32^nd minute; both of which were point blank attempts by the Hoyas. He got his hand on the first in a diving effort to his left; and the second he was able to haul in off a one-time attempt.
• The Friars' leading goal scorer Brendan McSorley connected on a header in the 35^th minute, but his effort sailed high of the net.
• The Hoyas were awarded a free kick with 48-second left in the opening half. The ball was loose in the box for a short time before Sean Zawadzki fired a shot high and out of play.
• The game was a scoreless draw through the first 45 minutes.
• Georgetown led in shots (7-3), shots on goal (3-2) and corner kicks (2-0).
• The Hoyas were awarded a penalty kick in the 51^st minute, and Stojanovic stepped up and sent a low shot over the goal line just inside the right post.
• After a collision in the box between McSorley and Nikopolidis, Paulo Lima was selected to take a penalty at 63:05. Lima's bid was denied, and nearly collected his own rebound for the another look at the net, but Georgetown cleared the ball from danger.
• Smith put another header toward the goal with just under 10 minutes to play, but his was wide and led to a corner kick.
• After a bit of offensive pressure from the Friars it was McSorley who scored the equalizer on a right-footed shot from the right side of the box (1-1) in the 84^th minute. The goal was assisted by Lima and Gil Santos.
• The match went to overtime tied, 1-1.
• Providence earned back-to-back corner kicks four minutes into the extra session, but were unable to get a solid effort toward the net.
• Georgetown's Stojanovic netted the golden goal at 95:34 to give the Hoyas their fifth BIG EAST title since 2015.

NOTES
• The loss marked the Friars first OT loss of the season and moved to 1-1-4 in overtime games this year.
• Burns finished the day with seven saves.
• McSorley recorded two goals in the tournament; The game winner in the semifinals and the equalizer in the title game to force OT.
• Providence finished as runner-up at the BIG EAST Championship for the fifth time in program history.
• Burns, McSorley and Diarbian were named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team.
• The Friars will await word on its NCAA selection, which is scheduled to be announced on Monday, Nov. 15 at 1:00 p.m. on NCAA.com.
