No. 18 Men's Soccer Set To Face No. 7 Georgetown In The BIG EAST Championship Game

Friars and Hoyas kickoff at Noon on Sunday, Nov. 14 on FS2.

SIXTH APPEARANCE IN BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
The 18th-ranked and No. 2 seed Friars will be making their sixth appearance all-time in the BIG EAST Championship Game. Providence defeated No. 6 seed Butler in the BIG EAST semifinals, 2-0, on Thursday, Nov. 11. The Friars are 1-4 all-time in the BIG EAST Championship Game.

FRIARS IMPROVED TO 22-19 OVERALL AT BIG EAST TOURNAMENT 
Providence has appeared in the BIG EAST Tournament 20 times since the conference championship began in 1983. The Friars have posted a 22-19 overall record in BIG EAST Tournament play.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
The Friars made just four appearances in the tournament from 1983 to 2001, but have been mainstays at the championship for the last two decades, appearing in 16 of the last 19 tournaments (2002-2021).

FRIARS EARN THE NO. 2 SEED FOR THE FIRST TIME
Providence earned the No. 2 seed for the first time in tournament history With their victory over Butler in the semifinals, Providence improved to 1-0 as a No. 2 seed. A full breakdown of records by seed is below:

FRIARS ALL-TIME IN THE BIG EAST SEMIFINALS
Including this season, the Friars have played in the BIG EAST Semifinal Round 15 times, including seven of the last nine seasons. 

FRIARS VS. THE NO. 1 SEED IN THE BIG EAST TOURNAMENT
The Friars 4-7 all-time vs. the No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament, including a 1-1 record in the championship game.

THE ONE AND ONLY
The Friars claimed the BIG EAST Tournament title in 2014. That year, Providence entered tournament play as the No. 4 seed and took down No. 2 seed Xavier in the championship game, 2-1. That same season, the Friars advanced to the College Cup, eventually falling in the national semifinal to UCLA, 3-2, in double-overtime.

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE
The Friars enter Sunday's final with a 10-3-4 overall record. Providence posted a 5-2-3 mark in the BIG EAST Conference.

The Friars are currently ranked No. 18 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, as of Nov. 9. Providence has been inside the top-25 of the United Soccer Coaches Poll for eight-consecutive weeks.

The Friar completed the regular-season schedule ranked 19th in the most recent NCAA RPI (through games played Nov. 7). Providence has been inside the top-20 of the RPI in each of the last five weeks, since its initial release on Oct. 11. 

On Oct. 29, the Division I Men's Soccer Committee revealed its top-16, two weeks ahead of selection Monday. Providence College was featured at No. 13 and was one of two BIG EAST Conference teams on the list. Georgetown was ranked No. 1.

Providence finished the regular season schedule unbeaten at home on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium (6-0-2).

All three of the Friars' losses this season have come on the road, including a 2-1 loss at Butler (Oct. 16), a 2-1 loss at New Hampshire (Sept. 3) and a 2-1 loss at Creighton to close the regular-season schedule (Nov. 3).

FRIARS OFFENSE TOPS THE BIG EAST
The Friars lead the BIG EAST in multiple offensive categories and also rank among the top-30 in the nation. Providence ranks 25th in the nation in points per game (6.35), 21st in scoring offense (2.12), 25th in total goals (36) and 25th in total points (108). The Friars rank second in the BIG EAST and 23rd among NCAA Division I soccer programs in total assists (36).

BALANCED ATTACK 
Thirteen different players on the roster have scored at least one goal, and nine of those 13 are multi-goal scorers.

 

SECOND HALF SURGE
Providence has scored 26 of its 36 goals this season during the second half. In their most recent game against Butler in the BIG EAST semifinals, the Friars scored two second-half goals in a 2-0 victory.

FRIARS VS. RANKED OPPONENTS
Providence has earned a 3-1-0 record vs. nationally ranked opponents. The Friars' only loss vs. ranked foes came against then-No. 14 New Hampshire, 2-1, on Sept. 3.

FRIARS IN OVERTIME
Providence has posted a 1-0-4 record this season in overtime, including a 1-0-3 mark during BIG EAST play. 

PLAYERS TO WATCH
Brendan McSorley leads the team in scoring with 16 points on seven goals and two assists. Three of his seven goals have been game winners. He tallied the first goal in Providence's 2-0 victory against Butler on Thursday, which marked his team-best third game-winning goal of the season.

Luis Garcia ranks second on the team in scoring with 15 points on five goals and five assists. He assisted on Brendan McSorley's game-winning goal in the BIG EAST semifinals, having served a ball into the box during a corner kick in the 64th minute of play.

Paulo Lima (11 points) and Davis Smith (10 points) round out the list of players in double-digit points. Lima owns four goals and three assists, while Smith has collected three goals and four assists.

Gevork Diarbian, who scored a goal in the semifinals against Butler, checks in with nine points on three goals and three assists.

Simon Triantafillou leads the team in assists (six) and has scored one goal on the year for eight points. He picked up his sixth assist in the Friars' semifinal win over Butler on Nov. 11.

Lukas Burns has played 1595 minutes in goal for Providence and owns a 0.90 goals against average and a 0.746 save percentage. He has been the goalkeeper of record in each match this season (10-3-4) and has recorded six clean sheets, including five shut-out victories.

In the semifinal game against Butler, he made a diving save on a penalty kick to keep the match level at 0-0, allowing his team to get two goals within a span of a minute shortly after. Burns made three saves in the semis.

OFFENSIVE THREATS IN BIG EAST PLAY
Paulo Lima and Luis Garcia paced the Friars' offense during BIG EAST regular-season action with nine point each. Both players recorded team-highs in goals (three) and assists (three). Davis Smith is third on the team in scoring vs. BIG EAST opponents, recording seven of his 10 points overall in league play (2g / 3a).

FRIARS 9-0-1 WHEN SCORING TWO-OR-MORE GOALS
Providence has posted a 9-0-1 record when scoring two-or-more goals in a game.  Additionally, the Friars are 7-0 when scoring three-or-more goals. The Friars scored a season-high six goals against Saint Peter's on Aug. 29. 

REMATCH OF 2019 BIG EAST TITLE GAME
Providence and Georgetown will meet in the BIG EAST Championship Game for the second time in the last three years. In 2019, the top-seeded Hoyas defeated No. 3 seed Friars, 3-1, at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C.

PROVIDENCE AND GEORGETOWN ALL-TIME IN THE BIG EAST TOURNAMENT
Providence and Georgetown have met five times in the BIG EAST Tournament and the Hoyas have earned victories in three of those five matches.

FRIARS VS. GEORGETOWN ALL-TIME
Providence trails the all-time series against Georgetown 14-19-4.

The Friars won the most recent meeting between the two programs, 3-0, on Oct. 13. The Hoyas entered that game unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in the nation.

Providence's victory over Georgetown this season, marked its first since Oct. 15, 2014. On that day, the Friars claimed a 2-0 win at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C. From 2015 to the spring season of 2021, Georgetown posted a 7-0-2 marks against the Friars.

2021 REGULAR-SEASON MATCH UP
Providence and Georgetown met during the regular season on Oct. 13 in Providence, R.I. The Friars earned a 3-0 victory against the Hoyas.

Providence held the edge in shots (10-7) and shots on goal (6-2), while the Hoyas recorded a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Luis Garcia scored two goals and added an assist for a career-high  five points. Simon Triantafillou scored his lone goal of the season during the match.

Lukas Burns collected two saves in the shut-out victory.
