No. 2 seed Providence will face No. 6 seed Butler in the BIG EAST Semifinals on Nov. 11 at 1:30 p.m.
FRIARS SET TO FACE BUTLER IN BIG EAST SEMIFINAL
The Friars enter the BIG EAST Tournament as the No. 2 seed and earned a bye into the semifinals. Providence will face No. 6 seed Butler on Thursday, Nov. 11 at 1:30 p.m. on Shaw Field in Washington, D.C. The Bulldogs eliminated No. 3 seed St. John's in the quarterfinals in a penalty shootout. The match was a scoreless draw after regulation and two overtime periods, but Butler punched its ticket to the semis with a 4-2 edge in penalty kicks.
FRIARS MAKING 20TH APPEARANCE IN THE BIG EAST TOURNAMENT
Providence is making its 20th appearance all-time in the BIG EAST Tournament. The Friars have posted a 21-19 overall record in BIG EAST Tournament play.
HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
The Friars made just four appearances in the tournament from 1983 to 2001, but have been mainstays in the tournament for the last two decades, appearing in 16 of the last 19 tournaments.
FRIARS EARN THE NO. 2 SEED FOR THE FIRST TIME
Providence earned the No. 2 seed for the first time in tournament history, and will look to put its first result on the board as such. A full breakdown of records by seed is below:

FRIARS ALL-TIME IN THE BIG EAST SEMIFINALS
The Friars have played in the BIG EAST Semifinal Round 14 times, including six of the last eight seasons. Providence is 4-9 all-time in the semifinals, with its last appearance coming in 2019 - a 2-1 victory over St. John's.
FRIARS VS. THE NO. 6 SEED IN THE BIG EAST TOURNAMENT
The Friars are 2-0 all-time vs. the No. 6 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament. In 2018, third-seeded Providence defeated No. 6 seed St. John's 1-0 in the quarterfinals. In 2019, the third-seeded Friars defeated sixth-seeded Marquette 3-0 in the quarterfinals.
THE ONE AND ONLY
The Friars claimed the BIG EAST Tournament title in 2014. That year, Providence entered tournament play as the No. 4 seed and took down No. 2 seed Xavier in the championship game, 2-1.
SCOUTING PROVIDENCE
The Friars enter the tournament with an 9-3-4 overall record, including a 5-2-3 mark in the BIG EAST Conference.
The Friars are currently ranked No. 18 in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, as of Nov. 9. Providence has been inside the top-25 of the United Soccer Coaches Poll for eight-consecutive weeks.
The Friar also currently rank 19th in the most recent NCAA RPI. Providence has been inside the top-20 of the RPI in each of the last five weeks, since its initial release on Oct. 11.
On Oct. 29, the Division I Men's Soccer Committee revealed its top-16, two weeks ahead of selection Monday. Providence College was featured at No. 13 and was one of two BIG EAST Conference teams on the list. Georgetown checked in at No. 1.
Providence finished the regular season schedule unbeaten at home on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium (6-0-2).
All three of the Friars' losses this season have come on the road, including a 2-1 loss at Butler (Oct. 16), a 2-1 loss at New Hampshire (Sept. 3) and a 2-1 loss at Creighton to close the regular-season schedule (Nov. 3).
On Oct. 13, the Friars defeated top-ranked and previously unbeaten Georgetown, 3-0.
FRIARS OFFENSE TOPS THE BIG EAST
The Friars lead the BIG EAST in multiple offensive categories and also rank among the top-30 in the nation. Providence ranks 26th in the nation in points per game (6.38), 24th in scoring offense (2.12), 28th in total goals (34) and 28th in total points (102). The Friars rank third in the BIG EAST and 29th among NCAA Division I soccer programs in total assists (34).
BALANCED ATTACK
Thirteen different players on the roster have scored at least one goal, and nine of those 13 are multi-goal scorers.
SECOND HALF SURGE
Providence has scored 24 of its 34 goals this season during the second half.
FRIARS VS. RANKED OPPONENTS
Providence has earned a 3-1-0 record vs. nationally ranked opponents. The Friars' only loss vs. ranked foes came against then-No. 14 New Hampshire, 2-1, on Sept. 3.
FRIARS IN OVERTIME
Providence has posted a 1-0-4 record this season in overtime, including a 1-0-3 mark during BIG EAST play.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Brendan McSorley and Luis Garcia lead the team in scoring with 14 points each. McSorely has a team-best six goals and also owns two assists. Garcia Is second in goals (five) and tied for second in assists (four).
Paulo Lima (11 points) and Davis Smith (10 points) round out the list of players in double-digit points. Lima owns four goals and three assists, while Smith has collected three goals and four assists.
Five players are tied four fifth place in the scoring column with seven points each. Gevork Diarbian is one of the five, checking in with two goals and three assists. Diarbian is ranked first in the conference in shot accuracy and 11th among NCAA Division I players. He has put 21 of his 35 shot attempts on target (.600).
Simon Triantafillou leads the team in assists (five) and has scored one goal to join Diarbian with seven points.
Lukas Burns has played 1506 minutes in goal for Providence and owns a 0.96 goals against average and a 0.733 save percentage. He has been the goalkeeper of record in each match this season (9-3-4) and has recorded five clean sheets, including four shut-out victories.
OFFENSIVE THREATS IN BIG EAST PLAY
Paulo Lima and Luis Garcia pace the Friars' offense vs. BIG EAST opponents with nine point each. Both players have recorded team-highs in goals (three) and assists (three). Davis Smith is third on the team in scoring vs. BIG EAST opponents, recording seven of his 10 points overall in conference play (2g / 3a).
FRIARS ARE 7-0 WHEN SCORING 3+ GOALS
The Friars are a perfect 7-0 this season when scoring three goals (or more) in a game. The Friars scored a season-high six goals against Saint Peter's on Aug. 29. Providence scored three goals in three BIG EAST games this season vs. Seton Hall (3-2), Xavier (3-2) and Georgetown (3-0).
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. BUTLER
The Friars and Bulldogs have met nine times in the history of the two soccer programs. Butler leads the all-time series, 2-6-1.
Butler defeated Providence during the regular season in Indianapolis, Ind. on Oct. 16 (2-1). The Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead as Henri Kumwenda scored at 10:58, followed by an own goal at 31:18. Gevork Diarbian scored the lone Friar goal for the Friars less than three minutes later (33:37).
Providence held the advantage in shots (13-10) and corner kicks (6-3). The teams were even in shots on goal at five apiece.
PROVIDENCE VS. BUTLER IN THE BIG EAST TOURNAMENT
The Friars and Bulldogs have met just once in the BIG EAST Tournament and dates back to the 2015 quarterfinal round. The No. 6 seed Friars advanced to the semifinals over the No. 2-seed Bulldogs on penalty kicks. Regulation and two overtimes left the match knotted, 2-2. Providence edged Butler with a 4-2 advantage in PKs.
