Women’s Hockey Hosts UNH And Northeastern To Open Hockey East Play

Providence will host University of New Hampshire at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 8 before hosting No. 2 Northeastern University at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9 in the team's opening weekend of Hockey East play.

Scouting the Friars
Providence finished last year's condensed schedule with a 12-8-1 record, including a 10-6-1 mark in the Hockey East, with a .617 winning percentage. The program advanced to its second NCAA Tournament appearance and advanced to the Hockey East Championship game for the first time since 2012, marking the program's seventh trip to the title game all-time. The Friars spent 14-consecutive weeks in the national rankings, inside the top-10.

Providence returns top scorer, Sara Hjalmarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden), who posted 5 goals and 12 assists last season for a team-high 17 points. Offensive threat Caroline Peterson (East Falmouth, Mass.) also returns to the lineup. Peterson tallied 8 goals and 7 assists for the second most points on the team (15) in her junior season.

The Friars return standout freshman defensemen Brooke Becker (Orchard Park, N.Y. ) and Claire Tyo (Massena, N.Y.). Becker was the third leading scorer in points on the team (14) with three goals and 11 assists. She was named to the Hockey East Pro Ambitions All-Rookie Team at the end of last season for her season performance which included three game-winning assists. Tyo put up three goals and eight assists last season for 11 points and received the program's Rookie of the Year Award.

In net, Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) returns for Providence. Abstreiter started all 21 of the Friars games last season and tallied a career high 526 saves. She also registered a career high 41 saves in her final two games against No. 2 Northeastern in the Hockey East Championship Game (March 6) and No. 1 Wisconsin in the NCAA Tournament.
 
Exhibition Versus The Boston Pride
The Friars defeated the Boston Pride, 3-2, in an exhibition game on Oct. 1. Sophomore Lindsay Bochna scored the first two goals for the Friars and Hunter Barnett added the game-winner with just 13 seconds left in regulation. Barnett's goal broke a 2-2 tied game and claimed victory for the Friars over the PHF team. Providence posted 23 shots compared to the Prides' 31.
 
Hockey East Preseason Poll 
The Friars were picked to finish second in the Hockey East Preseason poll, which was released on Thursday, Sept. 23. Providence received 75 points, finishing behind Northeastern (90). The Huskies, who went 22-2-1 overall last year and fell to No. 1 Wisconsin in the NCAA Championship game, received nine first place votes. Providence received the other lone first place vote.
 
Rounding out the poll was Boston College (70), UConn (67), Boston University (59), Vermont (52), Maine (43), UNH (40), Holy Cross (25), and Merrimack (19).

Friars in the National Polls 
The Friars received votes in both the USCHO and USA Hockey Polls to open the season. Providence tallied three votes in the USCHO poll and 10 votes in the USA Hockey Poll.
 
Fresh Friar Faces 
Providence welcomes six new players to the roster for the 2021-22 season. Ashlyn Garnett (Nova Scotia, Canada) comes from Canada as the remaining five enter Providence from the United States; Lily Martinson (Allen, Texas), Kailey Sato (South Pasadena, Calif), Hope Walinski (Lincoln, R.I.), Lily Hendrikson (Edina, Minn.), and Ashley Clark (North Weymouth, Mass.)
 
Captains Named
Senior Caroline Peterson was named captain for the 2021-22 season, along with alternate captains Sandra Abstreiter, Lauren DeBlois, and Hunter Barnett.

Last season vs. UNH
The Friars and Wildcats matched up only twice last season. The teams played a home-and-home series on Feb. 5 at New Hampshire (0-1) and home at Schneider on Feb. 6 (5-4), splitting the series.

Scouting the Wildcats
UNH finished the 2020-21 season with a 7-14-1 record overall and a 6-13-1 mark in the conference. The Wildcats currently hold a 0-2 record after falling to Boston University in both nights of a home-and-home series on Friday, Oct. 1 (2-4) and Saturday, Oct. 2 (0-5).

The Wildcats return top players Nicole Kelly and Lauren Martin, who led UNH in points last season with 14 and 11, respectively. UNH is also returning their starting goaltender, Ava Boutilier, who rounded out the 2020-21 season with a .914 save percentage and a 2.62 goals against average.

Last season vs. Northeastern
The Friars and the Huskies met four times this season. Northeastern claimed victory in all three regular season games, defeating Providence 4-0 in a road matchup (Jan. 12) and sweeping the Friars in a weekend series, 4-1 (Jan. 22) and 5-0 (Jan. 23). Providence met Northeastern for the fourth time in the Hockey East Championship on March 6 and were defeated 6-2.

Scouting the Huskies
Northeastern finished the 2020-21 season with a 22-2-1 overall record and a 17-1-1 mark in the Hockey East Conference, ranking No. 1 in the conference and No. 2 in the nation. Northeastern competed in the NCAA Championship game versus No. 1 Wisconsin, losing in overtime, 1-2. The Huskies currently hold a 2-0 on the season after blanking Holy Cross on both nights of a home-and-home series, 5-0 and 6-0.

Northeastern returns top players Alina Mueller, Skylar Fontaine and Chloé Aurard who put up 38, 30, and 28 points for the Huskies last season, respectively. The Huskies also return goaltender Aerin Frankel, the 2021 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award Recipient. Frankel finished the 2020-21 season with a .965 save percentage and a 0.81 goals against average.
