PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's and women's hockey programs combined for a total of seven ACHA All American Scholars as announced by the American Hockey Coaches Association on Tuesday (July 21).
Goaltenders
Michael Lackey (Washington, D.C) and
Gabe Mollot-Hill (Ottawa, Ont.) represented Providence College men's hockey, while
Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany),
Chloe Gonsalves (Toronto, Ont.),
Clare Minnerath (Sartell, Minn.),
Maureen Murphy (Buffalo, N.Y.) and
Giana Savastano (Mapleville, R.I.) represented the Friars' women's hockey program.
"These are exceptional individuals," said AHCA executive director Joe Bertagna. "The sport demands a great deal from these athletes so it is a great statement they make, individually and collectively, with their ability to attain this level of academic achievement while contributing at the NCAA Division I level."
Due to the effects of Covid-19 on actual grades in the spring, the AHCA adopted revised criteria for this year's honorees. To qualify, a student-athlete must have attained a 3.75 GPA for the fall semester and participated in 40% of their school's games. The names of 571 Division I men and women are being released today and their Division II-III counterparts will be announced in the coming weeks. A small number of waivers to the 40% participation requirement was granted due to injury or for back-up goaltenders.
