Abbey Wheeler Named Co-Most Outstanding Track Performer At The BIG EAST Championships

Abbey Wheeler won the 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter events in Geneva, Ohio.
GENEVA, OHIO- The Providence College men's and women's indoor track teams competed in its second day of the BIG EAST Championship on Monday, Mar. 2 in Geneva, Ohio. Abbey Wheeler won the 3,000-meter event (9:25.32) to claim her second BIG EAST title. Wheeler was named Co-Most Outstanding Track Performer after first-place finishes in the 3,000-meter and 5,000-meter events.
Off the gun in the 3,000-meter, Wheeler worked to create distance from the rest of the pack. In the chase pack was Lilly Tuck (Sunderland, Canada) and Maria Coffin (Annapolis, Md.) Wheeler continued to separate herself throughout the duration of the race and crossed the line at 9:25.32. Tuck got to the front of the chase pack to finish second (9:32.78) in the event. Coffin was the third Friar to finish in the top-five, placing fifth (9:34.67).
For the men, Michael O'Leary (St. James, N.Y.) highlighted the day with a strong second place finish in the 3,000-meter. O'Leary was fifth in the pack for most of the race before kicking it all the way to first with just a little over one lap to go. O'Leary pushed the pace but was edged by Butler's Euan Makepeace in the last 100-meters. O'Leary finished with a time of 8:16.18.
Other Notable Performances on day two:
Nick Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.) finished seventh in the men's mile final with a time of 4:23.24.
Halle Atkinson (Franklin, Mass.) placed fourth in the 800-meter final (2:12.83).
The 4x800-meter relay team of Tessa Hunt (Wellington, New Zealand), Bridget Mitchell (Milton, Mass.), Alex O'Neill (Ennis, Ireland) and Dana Lowney (Easton, Mass.) crossed the line in fourth (8:59.79).
The lineup of Jack Carleo (Newburyport, Mass.) Ryan Jendzejec (Chappaqua, N.Y.), Connor Visnic (Orange, Conn.) and Angus White (New Plymouth, New Zealand) finished fourth in the 4x800-meter relay (7:33.71)
The men and women's indoor track teams compete next on Saturday, Mar. 7 and Sunday, Mar. 8 at the IC4A/ECAC Championships in Boston, Mass.
