CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Providence College men's basketball team was defeated by the Xavier Musketeers, 64-58, on Saturday, Feb. 8 in Cincinnati, Ohio. The Friars record fell to 13-11 on the season and 6-5 in BIG EAST play.
Nate Watson (Portsmouth, Va.) led the team offensively with 16 points and seven rebounds. He shot 8-13 from the field.
Both teams opened up playing tough in the paint and drawing fouls.
Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) scored the first field goal of the night for Providence which was quickly followed by two consecutive Watson slams. Diallo finished the night with 14 points, six rebounds and three assists. Xavier went on a 7-0 run to give them the lead 16-10 after just over eight minutes of play.
Coming out of the first media timeout, Providence went on a 10-0 run in 1:54 minutes.
David Duke (Providence, R.I.) knocked down two three-point goals. He ended with 12 points, three rebounds and three assists. Not long after, Diallo and
Kalif Young (Vaughan, Ontario) contributed with layups. Friars had the lead 20-16 with 9:06 left in the first.
Providence continued to contest in the paint.
Maliek White (Richmond, Va.) chipped in with a steal and layup on the fast break followed by another bucket by Diallo. Xavier answered with an alley-oop to Trey Jones and tied up the game at 26 with 3:20 remaining.
In the last minutes of the first, the game remained physical and a battle for boards. Late baskets from Watson and Young put the Friars ahead, 30-28. Xavier did not score in the last 3:06 minutes of the half.
Going into the locker room, Providence had the lead 30-28. Providence shot 14-30 (46.7%) from the field, 2-11 (18.2%) from three and 0-1 from the line. Xavier was 12-27 (44.4%) from the field, 2-9 (22.2%) from three and 2-2 (100%) from the line.
Watson did what he does best in the post to start the second half. White connected with him where he got by the defender and dunked the ball home. Another bucket from Watson and Diallo kept the Friars on top. Xavier hit one from deep to tie the game up at 36 each.
A.J. Reeves (Roxbury, Mass.) was able to respond cutting to the basket on an easy layup. The Friars led 38-36 going into the first media timeout.
Luwane Pipkins (Chicago, Ill.) knocked down two threes to spark a small run for the Friars. Watson continued to be a threat in the paint, dunking once again. Xavier was able to answer Providence's hot streak with a baseline three. Xavier had the advantage 47-46 with 10:04 to play.
Xavier went on a 6-0 run in 1:54 minutes of play. The Friars struggled finding the bottom of the net. Their last field goal was with 7:17 on the clock. Xavier had the lead 58-52 with 4:59 on the clock.
The Musketeers held onto their lead while the Friars only made two field goals in the final minutes of the game. Xavier took the game, 64-58. The Friars ended shooting 24-57 (42.1%) from the field, 4-23 (17.4%) from three and 6-9 (66.7%) from the line. The Musketeers shot 24-55 (43.6%), 5-19 (26.3%) from deep and 11-17 (64.7%) from the line. Tyrique Jones led Xavier with 14 points and 18 rebounds.
Up next, the Friars stay on the road to take on St. John's University on Wednesday, Feb. 12. The game is set for tip-off at 8:30 p.m. and will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
