QUEENS, N.Y. – The Providence College men's basketball team fell to St. John's University, 80-69, on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at Carnesecca Arena in Queens, N.Y. The Friars record fell to 13-12 on the season and 6-6 in BIG EAST play. Senior
Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) led the team offensively with 19 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. This topped his 15 board performance against the Red Storm last season on Feb. 9, 2019.
Diallo led the Friars in the opening minutes of the game. After trailing 8-4, Providence went on a 6-0 run with four of those points coming from Diallo.
David Duke (Providence, R.I.) contributed with a dunk off the fast break. He ended the evening with 12 points, two rebounds and two assists.
The Friars first six field goals all came in the paint.
A.J. Reeves (Roxbury, Mass.) knocked down the first basket from downtown. He finished with 12 points and six rebounds. St. John's led 17-15 with 11:15 left in the half.
L.J. Figueroa got hot and nailed his third three of the night. The Red Storm went on a 9-0 run, from three consecutive baskets from behind the arc. They extended their lead to eleven. The Friars could not find the bottom of the basket for over four minutes. Diallo ended the drought on a second chance shot in the paint. Duke found an open look and made his first three ball of the night. St. John's led 30-20 with 3:59 left in the first half.
Kalif Young (Vaughan, Ontario) added a bucket to bring the Friars within seven. Providence did not have a field goal in the last three minutes of play.
Both teams headed into the locker room with a 33-25 St. John's lead. Providence shot 10-26 (38.5%) from the field, 2-10 (20.0%) from three and 3-6 (50.0%) from the line. St. John's was 13-31 (41.9%) from the field, 5-12 (41.7%) from three and 2-5 (40.0%) from the line. The Friars had 11 turnovers compared to the Johnnies' five.
The Friars started the second half slow, while St. John's scored seven straight points.
Luwane Pipkins (Chicago, Ill.) scored his first three of the night to bring the Friars within ten. Providence called a timeout immediately after. St. John's led 40-30 after 2:22 of play.
Providence got the game within four after a three point basket from
Maliek White (Richmond, Va.) and a Diallo slam on the fast break. The score was 51-47 with 11:45 left in the second. St. John's went on a 7-0 run over the next two minutes to lengthen their lead back to 11.
The Friars continued to turn the ball over and had trouble scoring down the stretch. St. John's was able to hold off the Friars forcing turnovers. The Friars ended shooting 23-56 (41.1%) from the field, 6-22 (27.3%) from three and 17-29 (60.9%) from the line. St. John's ended shooting 27-59 (45.8%) from the field, 9-21 (42.9%) from three and 17-27 (63.0%) from the line. L.J. Figueroa led the Johnnies offensively with 19 points.
Up next, the Friars come home and host the No. 10 Seton Hall Pirates on Saturday, Feb. 15. The contest marks the annual Pink Out Friartown game. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m. at the Dunkin' Donuts Center and will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
