Four Friars Score In Double Figures To Claim 62-55 Victory Over Georgetown

Friars will host Villanova on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. for senior day.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Georgetown, 62-55, in BIG EAST regular-season action on Feb. 28 in Providence, R.I. 
 
FIRST QUARTER:
• Providence used a 10-0 run late in the first quarter to gain a 20-11 lead. 
• The Hoyas were scoreless during the final 3:38 of the quarter.
Kyra Spiwak (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) combined to score 15 of the Friars' 20 points.
• Brianna Jones scored seven of the Hoyas' 11 points in the opening 10 minutes.
 
SECOND QUARTER:
• The Friars started the scoring in the second quarter, but the Hoyas answered with a 9-0 run to get within two (22-20) and force a Providence timeout with 7:03 on the clock. The Friars committed three turnovers during the run.
• Georgetown tied the game (22-22) to make it an 11-0 run, but Kaela Webb (Pontiac, Mich.) got the Friars back on the board with a lay-up at the 5:38 mark.
• A 9-0 run by the Friars during a span of 2:19 provided a 36-25 advantage.
• Marvellous Osagie-Erese hit one of two free throws with 1:08 left in the quarter to put an end to the Hoyas' scoring drought.
• Providence held a 36-26 lead at halftime.
• Spiwak paced the Friars in the first half with 13 points, while Geary added 10 points and six boards.
 
THIRD QUARTER:
• Providence used a 6-0 run over the course of 1:12, while shooting 3-3 from the field, to force a Georgetown timeout with 2:03 left on the clock.
• The spurt provided the Friars with a 48-33 lead, and the team carried a 50-37 advantage into the break.
 
FOURTH QUARTER:
• The Friars outscored the Hoyas 10-5 heading into the final media timeout of the game to gain a 60-42 advantage on the scoreboard.
• Georgetown went on a 15-2 run, including a 7-0 run to close the game, but the Friars held on for a 62-55 victory. 
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Providence snapped a 10-game winless streak against the Hoyas, earning its first victory over Georgetown since March 1, 2015. Prior to the win on Friday night, Providence had defeated the Hoyas just five times in the last 35 meetings.
• Four Friars finished in double figures led by Spiwak's 15 points. It marked her highest scoring total in BIG EAST play this season.
• Webb contributed 14 points and five assists, while Geary notched 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists.
Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) recorded her sixth double-double of the season and 12th of her career on 10 points and 10 rebounds.
• Providence dished 17 assists on 24 made field goals and finished the day shooting 47-percent from the field (24-51). 
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars will conclude their regular-season schedule on Sunday, March 1 against Villanova at 1:00 p.m. in Providence, R.I Prior to the game, the program will hold its annual senior ceremony at approximately 12:40 p.m. In addition to a graduate assistant and two team managers, the Friars will honor its lone graduating student-athlete, Ny-Asia Franklin (East Orange, Mass.). Providence's game against Villanova will be broadcast live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN).
 
2020 BIG EAST WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT:
• The Friars will begin play at the 2020 BIG EAST Tournament in the First Round on Friday, March 6. A full bracket with seeding and game times will be released following the conclusion of the league's final regular-season games on Sunday, March 1. The BIG EAST Tournament will be played at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Ill., culminating in the league's Championship Game on Monday, March 9.
