WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Providence College men's basketball topped the Georgetown Hoyas, 73-63, on Wednesday, Feb 19 at the Capital One Arena. The Friars improved their record to 15-12 on the season and 8-6 in BIG EAST play. Four Friars ended with double-digit scoring on the evening.
Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) led the Friars with 18 points, eight rebounds and two assists.
Luwane Pipkins (Chicago, Ill.) had 16 points and three rebounds.
Kalif Young (Vaughan, Ontario) led the team in rebounds with nine and had 11 points.
Maliek White (Richmond, Va.) led in assists (seven) and also had 11 points.
The Hoyas started the contest with a 9-0 run. Providence was 0-7 from the field in the first 4:30 minutes.
Luwane Pipkins (Chicago, Ill.) scored the Friars' opening basket of the game to put Providence on the board. Georgetown held the lead 12-5 with 11:44 left on the clock.
Diallo and White scored consecutive three-point balls to give the Friars a small 6-0 run. The Hoyas responded with shot from downtown to end the run. Young contributed with a layup on the following possession. Georgetown had not scored in the last 2:04 minutes and the Friars took their first lead of the game after an
Emmitt Holt (Rochester, N.Y.) three. The Friars led 16-15 going into the under eight media timeout.
Diallo kept the Friars hot from beyond the arc, knocking down back-to-back threes. The Hoyas stayed in it, making their free throws and making the last shot of the half. Georgetown led the way at halftime, 34-30. Providence shot 10-32 (31.3%) from the field, 7-15 (46.7%) from three, and 3-4 (75.0%) from the free throw line. The Hoyas shot 9-22 (40.9%) from the field, 3-6 (50.0%) from three, and 13-15 (86.7%) from the free throw line.
Nate Watson (Portsmouth, Va.) scored his first field goal of the half in the opening minute of the second half. He scored again in the paint less than a minute later to force Georgetown to call a timeout. The Hoyas led 36-34.
A.J. Reeves (Roxbury, Mass.) knocked down a baseline three to bring the Friars within one. Georgetown continued to make their baskets in the beginning of the second half, maintaining the lead. The Friars went on a 7-0 run led by a Young jumper and layup. Diallo contributed with an and one layup from down low. Providence had the lead 50-49 with 11:50 left to play.
With 7:21 on the clock, the Friars led 59-51. Providence went on a 9-0 run with buckets coming from Diallo, Young and Pipkins. The Hoyas had gone 0-10 on their last field goals and were scoreless for the last 4:09 minutes.
The Friars kept their lead after a jump shot from White and layup from Pipkins. Georgetown continued to struggle offensively. They had not scored a field goal in the last 10 minutes. Their last nine points had come from the line. With 3:11 on the clock, the Friars held on 63-56.

David Duke (Providence, R.I.) with 1:35 left to play. The Hoyas responded with a shot from deep, which was their first field goal after 13 minutes. Georgetown started to foul sending the Friars to the line. Offensive boards from Young and Diallo on missed free throws kept Providence in control to hold on for the win.
Providence finished 25-57 (43.9%) from the field, 10-25 (40.0%) from three, and 13-18 (72.2%) from the free throw line. Georgetown finished 17-44 (38.6%) from the field, 4-12 (33.3%) from three and 25-32 (78.1%) from the free throw line. Jahvon Blair led them offensively with 20 points and six rebounds.
Up next, the Friars will host the Marquette Golden Eagles on Saturday, Feb. 22 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. The game is set for tip-off at 12:00 p.m. and will be televised on FOX.
