Six Friars finished in double-digit scoring.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team defeated the No. 19 Marquette Golden Eagles, 84-72, on Saturday, February 22 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. The Friars' record advanced to 16-12 on the season and 9-6 in BIG EAST play. They currently hold sole possession of fourth place in the BIG EAST.
It marked the fourth win over a ranked team for Providence this season and its third straight over a ranked team at home. The Friars have posted a 2-0 mark versus Marquette this season. The Friars now have seven quadrant one wins.
"I'm very proud of our group," Head Coach Ed Cooley said. "I'm proud of our maturity and our ability to deal with adversity. I'm especially proud of Kalif (Young) and his improvement this season."
Luwane Pipkins (Chicago, Ill.) had a team-high 24 points for the Friars. He shot 9-14 from the field and made three three-point baskets in the game. Pipkins opened up the game for the Friars with a mid-range jumper. He had scored all of the Friars points heading into the first media timeout. Providence led 7-4.
Kalif Young (Vaughan, Ontario) completed an and-one with a dunk in the paint following the timeout. He finished with 10 points, three rebounds and five assists. Shortly after, A.J. Reeves (Roxbury, Mass.) and Maliek White (Richmond, Va.) drained corner threes on consecutive offensive possessions.
With 11 minutes left in the half, White made his second three-pointer of the game. The Friars jumped out to a 19-8 lead, forcing a Marquette timeout. Providence stayed hot from deep, as Reeves made another three-pointer.
On the ensuing offensive possession, David Duke (Providence, R.I.) converted on an alley-oop from Pipkins. Duke ended with 15 points and four assists. Reeves added his third three-pointer of the game with 5:32 left in the first half. The Friars led 31-17 and forced another Marquette timeout.
The Friars had a strong offensive performance to close out the half. With under a minute left, Watson made an open dunk in the paint and Pipkins knocked down yet another three-pointer. He had 17 points in the first half.
The Friars led the way at halftime, 43-29. Providence shot 17-31 (54.8%) from the field, 8-15 (53.3%) from three, and 1-2 (50.0%) from the free throw line. Marquette shot 9-24 (37.5%) from the field, 4-11 (36.4%) from three, and 7-9 (77.8%) from the free throw line.
After a scoreless three minutes for the Friars, Pipkins opened up the second half offensively with an and-one. Marquette shot 2-4 in the first four minutes of the half, while the Friars were only 1-6. The score was 48-36 at the first media timeout.
Following the timeout, Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) capped off a fastbreak with a dunk for his first points of the game. He had 10 points on the afternoon and shot a perfect 8-8 from the line. The Golden Eagles had not registered a field goal in over 4:30 minutes. Markus Howard ended the drought with 12:49 on the clock. Providence held the lead 52-40.
The Friars were also in the midst of a scoring drought, as they had not scored in over two minutes. Young broke the drought with a tough finish in the paint. Immediately after, Providence forced a turnover and Duke finished with an alley-oop on the other end. The Friars led 56-43 with 10:12 to play.
The Friars stayed hot from the field with baskets from Young and Duke. Meanwhile, Marquette struggled to convert on the offensive end. Providence grabbed their largest lead of the game, 21 points, after Duke converted on back-to-back possessions. The score was 71-50.
With just over four minutes remaining, Markus Howard broke a three-minute scoring drought for the Golden Eagles. Marquette had cut the deficit to 14 at the final media timeout and were on a 7-0 run.
Providence finished 28-55 (50.9%) from the field, 8-20 (40.0%) from three, and 20-27 (74.1%) from the free throw line. Marquette finished 20-49 (40.8%) from the field, 6-20 (30.0%) from three, and 26-30 (86.7%) from the free throw line. Markus Howard led the Golden Eagles offensively with a game-high 38 points on 10-25 shooting.
The Friars finished with six out of seven scorers in double-figures, in Diallo, Pipkins, Reeves, White, and Young. This was the third time this season the Friars had six or more players in double digits. The Golden Eagles finished with two players in double-figures and seven in the scoring column.
"We have to understand who we are and that we have a lot of different weapons," Young said.
In the next game, the Friars will head on the road to take on the No. 12 Villanova Wildcats on Saturday, Feb. 29. Tip-off is set for 12:00 p.m. and will be televised on FOX.
