PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The matchups for the 2020 Maui Invitational were released today (Oct. 7) and the Providence men's basketball team will face Big 10 foe Indiana on Monday, November 30. The Friars' second and third games in the Invitational will be played on December 1 and December 2. The three-day, 12-game bracket tournament (which will be aired on ESPN, ESPN2 or ESPNU) will take place at Harrah's Cherokee Center in Asheville, N.C. due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Providence will be making its third appearance in the Maui Invitational. The Friars' other appearances were in 1984 and 1991. In 1984, the Friars were crowned the first champions ever with a 60-58 win over Chaminade.
Other teams participating in the 2020 Maui Invitational will be Alabama (SEC), Davidson (A-10), Indiana (Big 10), North Carolina (ACC), Stanford (Pac-12), Texas (Big-12) and UNLV (Mountain West).
The Maui Invitational was founded in 1984 by Chaminade University, which has appeared in the tournament every year except 2018 and 2020. The event is historically located on the island of Maui in Lahaina, Hawaii in the Lahaina Civic Center.
Some of the past Maui Invitational winners include UConn (2010), Duke (2011), Illinois (2012), Syracuse (2013), Arizona (2014), Kansas (2015, 2019), North Carolina (2016), Notre Dame (2017) and Gonzaga (2018).
Owned and operated by ESPN events, all 12 games of the 2020 Maui Invitational will air on ESPN, ESPN2, or ESPNU and available on the ESPN App. All times listed are Eastern.
