Women's Hockey Clashes With No. 8 Boston University

Puck Drop
Providence will host No. 8/8 Boston University in the first game of the home-and-home series on Friday, Jan. 10 at 6:00 p.m. Puck drop is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. the following day on the campus of Boston University.

Friars Return Home
Providence returns home after winning six of their last eight games, posting a 2-1 record over the last three games on the road. The Friars most recently split a road series against Vermont with a 4-3 setback on Saturday, Jan. 4 before defeating the Catamounts in game two, 3-1.

Sara Hjalmarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden) posted two goals and two assists over the weekend, while teammate Whitney Dove (Port Moody, British Columbia) added one goal and three assists. Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) relieved Clare Minnerath (Sartell, Minn.) in game one, eventually recording the loss, she earned the start between the pipes in game two, tying her career-high in saves with 26. Abstreiter finished the weekend with a 1-1-0 record, posting a 1.30 goals against average and .947 save percentage on 36 saves.

Providence Battles To 2-1 Loss Against BU
The Friars and Terriers' most recent matchup led to a 2-1 setback to the No. 10 Terriers on Nov. 9, 2019. Providence knotted the game at 1-1 in the third period on a goal from Neve Van Pelt. The Terriers took the lead just a minute later on a power play goal by Julia Nearis. The game included 17 penalties including two majors.

Dove Leading The Way
Captain Whitney Dove is leading the charge for the Friars in her senior campaign, recording six goals and a team-high 14 assists. Her 20 points prove to be a team-best while playing in all 20 games this season. She ranks fifth in Hockey East in assists and is currently tied for eighth in points.

UConn Split
The Friars ended the first half of the season trading wins on opposing ice against the Connecticut Huskies on Dec. 5 and Dec. 6. Providence dropped game one in Schneider Arena, 1-0, before prevailing in overtime the following day, 2-1, in Storrs, Conn.

Providence trailed 1-0 entering the third period of game two before Whitney Dove (Port Moody, British Columbia) scored her fifth goal of the season, giving her a team-high 16 points at the midway point of the 2019-20 campaign. Avery Fransoo (North Battleford, Saskatchewan) finished off the Huskies 2:11 into the overtime period with her first goal of the season.

Providence In The Polls
This marks the third time this season that Providence has received votes in the USCHO Women's Poll. The Friars received four votes on January 6 with Boston University staying at their No. 8 spot.

Scouting the Friars
The Friars are currently 10-8-2 overall and 7-6-0 in Hockey East play. Providence earned a 1-0 shutout victory over No. 3 Northeastern to open league action (Oct. 25). Hayley Lunny scored the game's lone goal 3:18 into the second period and Clare Minnerath (Sartell, Minn.) posted a career-high 33 saves to fuel the win. It marked her first shutout of the season and second of her career.

Dove leads the Friars in points with 20. Dove has a team-high 14 assists while adding six goals on the season. Hjalmarsson trails Dove with 19 points on a team-high ten goals accompanied by nine assists. Hayley Lunny ranks third on the team in points with 12, while Murphy, Burton and Rickard and DeBlois are the other players in double figures (11).

Katrina Broccoli (North Haven, Conn.), Minnerath and Sandra Abstreiter have all seen time in net for the Friars, with Abstreiter getting her first action against Holy Cross (Nov. 1). Minnerath has sixteen starts, a 2.21 goals against average and a .902 save percentage. Abstreiter posted her first shutout of the season against the Crusaders with 26 saves. She has six appearances on the season with a 1.77 goals against average and .930 save percentage.

Four-Game Win Streak
The Friars held a season long winning streak of four games spanning from Nov. 17 to Nov. 30. Providence won 3-2 on home ice to begin the winning streak before defeating Merrimack in a home-and-home series on Nov. 22 and Nov. 23.

Providence then defeated Brown in the 25th annual Mayor's Cup, 10-0. The ten goals marked the most goals scored by a team in the Mayor's Cup history and first time the Friars have scored ten goals since Feb. 4, 2007, when they defeated Vermont, 10-1.

Hjalmarsson's Career Day
Sara Hjalmarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden) posted a career day against the Brown Bears, scoring three goals to go along with three assists. Her six points are the most by a player in the 25 years of the Mayor's Cup, and the most points scored by a women's player in a game this season in the NCAA.

She was named the Hockey East Player of the Week for her efforts. Hjalmarsson trails Dove for the team lead in points with 19 compared to Dove's 20.

Spreading The Wealth
Seventeen Friars have tallied a point this season with 15 players recording a goal. Seven players have reached double digits in Dove (20), Hjalmarsson (19), Lunny (12), Murphy (11), Burton (11), Rickard (11) and DeBlois (11).

Minnerath Earns Defensive Player of the Week Honors
Minnerath was named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 28. It marked her first league honor as a Friar. The senior netminder made a career-high 33 saves en route to her first shutout of the season against No. 3 Northeastern (Oct. 25). She posted a 1-1-0 that last week and made a total of 53 saves in two starts.

Burton Earns Rookie of the Week Honors
Burton scored a goal in each of her first two collegiate games, including the game winner against Quinnipiac (Oct. 5). For her efforts, she was named Hockey East Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week on Oct. 7. Burton's two goals came on just two total shots over that weekend.

Hockey East Preseason Poll
The Friars were picked to finish fourth in the Hockey East Preseason poll, which was released on Thursday, Sept. 26. Providence received 56 points and was picked to finish behind Northeastern (81), Boston University (71) and Boston College (65).

Rounding out the poll were New Hampshire (42), UConn (41), Merrimack (30), Maine (29), Vermont (25), and Holy Cross (nine).

Meet the Staff
Matt Kelly joined the Friars in 2018-19 for his inaugural season at the helm. He led the team to a 24-11-2 record, helping the Friars to tie the program-high for wins in a season. Kelly led Providence to the Hockey East Semifinals for the first time since 2013 and coached three Friars to Hockey East honors at the conclusion of the season.

Prior to Providence, Kelly served as a Head Scout for USA Hockey and the Women's National Team. His primary responsibility was to oversee and maintain the player pools for the U-18 and U-22 squads, in addition to the Women's National Team. During his time with USA Hockey, Kelly won a total of eleven gold medals. He recently captured a gold medal with the Women's National Team at the 2018 Olympics in PyeongChang. Additionally, he helped the U18 team win four-consecutive gold medals (2015-2018). This marked the first time any U18 team won four World Championships in a row.

Kelly hired Jake Anderson, Ali Domenico and Doug Ferry to round out his staff. Anderson focused mainly on the Friars' defensive unit during his first season. Providence gave up just 1.89 goals per game in 2018-19, which ranked seventh nationally. The Friars' penalty kill also ranked seventh, killing off 87.4 percent of opponents' opportunities. Domenico guided the Friars' offensive unit in her first season. Providence finished 13th nationally in goals per game, averaging 2.81 per game. The power play unit also finished 13th nationally, converting at on 19.1 percent of chances.

Hjalmarsson with Team Sweden
During the off-season, Sara Hjalmarsson had several chances to compete for Team Sweden. She was named to Sweden's National Team roster for the 2019 IIHF Ice Hockey Women's World Championship. She played four games for Team Sweden without tallying a point.

2018-19 Award Winners
The team had four players pick up Hockey East post-season honors. Murphy earned Second Team All-Star status for the second-consecutive season. Myers and Fransoo were named All-Star Honorable Mentions, marking each of their first-career league honors. Additionally, Sara Hjalmarsson was named to the All-Rookie Team.

Five different Friars earned Hockey East Weekly honors over the course of the season. Myers was named Defensive Player of the Week twice (Nov. 12, Mar. 4). Christina Putigna (Nov. 5), Maureen Murphy (Nov. 19) and Hayley Lunny (Nov. 26) each earned Player of the Week honors.  Sara Hjalmarsson was named Rookie of the Week on Oct. 16.

Murphy and Myers were also recognized with monthly awards from the league. Myers was Hockey East Goaltender of the Month in November and February. Murphy was Hockey East Player of the Month in November.

Scouting Boston University
No. 8 Boston University is 13-4-2 overall and 8-4-2 in the Hockey East. The Terriers sit in third place in Hockey East with 18 points. BU is currently on a seven-game unbeaten streak defeating Harvard, Vermont (twice), Boston College (twice), and Maine before tying the Black Bears in their most recent game, 3-3.

As a team, the Terriers average 2.9 goals per game while giving up 1.7. The Terriers convert on 30.1% of power play chances and kill off 87.5% of penalties.

Who to Watch
BU currently has 19 players with at least one point this season, with seven players reaching double digits. Sammy Davis leads the Terriers with eight goals and 15 assists for 23 points. Julia Nearis leads the team in goals with nine.

Corinne Schroeder has earned most of the time in net, starting in 14 games. She holds a 9-3-2 record with a 1.49 goals against average and .943 save percentage.
