Women’s Hockey Defeats Vermont To Split Road Series, 3-1

Sara Hjalmarsson scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season while adding two assists.

BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Providence College women's hockey team split the weekend series against the Vermont Catamounts, 3-1, on Sunday, January 5. Providence improves to 10-8-2 and 7-6-0 in Hockey East play.

GAME FLOW & NOTES
-Ciara Barone (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) netted her first goal of the season 10:31 into the first period to hand Providence an early 1-0 lead. Following an icing call, Sara Hjalmarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden) won the face-off inside where Barone one-timed a slap shot past the goaltender.
- Sandra Abstreiter (Freising, Germany) earned the start in between the pipes and picked up 10 saves in the opening period. Vermont held a 10-4 advantage in shots at the break.
- Providence added an early goal in the second period just 1:18 in, Hjalmarsson scored her tenth goal of the season. Lauren DeBlois (Lewiston, Maine) played the puck up the right boards to Hjalmarsson who slid a pass across the front of the net, the puck popped up off a defenders stick over the goaltenders left shoulder.
- The Friars held a 2-0 lead at the second intermission trailing in shots, 16-15. The Friars and Catamounts each failed to convert on their three power play opportunities in the opening 40 minutes.
- Both sides traded goals in the final period to seal Providence's 3-1 victory. Kristina Shanahan brought the Catamounts within one, 2-1, with 2:52 remaining in the third. Meaghan Rickard (Coventry, R.I.) answered to add an insurance goal just 37 seconds later. Hjalmarsson fed Rickard on the left wing who finished a one-timer past the goaltender sliding across the crease.
- Abstreiter tied her career-high in saves with 26, she improves to 2-3-0 on the season.
