Friars Fall To Marquette On The Road, 85-55

Three Friars scored in double figures led by Mary Baskerville's 11 points.

MILWAUKEE, WIS. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Marquette, 85-55, on Jan. 31 at the Al McGuire Center in Milwaukee, Wis. The Friars led by five (16-11) after the first quarter, but were unable to recover from a difficult second quarter during which the Golden Eagles posted a 24-7 scoring advantage and claimed a 35-23 lead at the half.
 
FIRST QUARTER:
• Marquette started the game with a 6-0 advantage before Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) got the Friars on the board at the 8:56 mark.
• The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 8-2, forcing a timeout by the Friars.
• A 13-0 offensive burst gave the Friars a 15-8 lead with 1:10 on the clock.
• Marquette was held scoreless for 5:28 of the quarter until Selena Lott hit a pair of free throws with 37-seconds left (15-10).
• The Friars went to the break with a 16-11 lead, having out-scored the Golden Eagles 14-3 over the final 6:05 of the frame.
 
SECOND QUARTER:
• The Golden Eagles took a 17-16 lead with a 6-0 spurt to start the second quarter.
Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) halted the run with driving lay-up on the left side of the key.
• Marquette responded with a 7-0 run to take a 24-18 lead, but it was Williams again on the drive to get the Friars on the board at the 4:31 mark.
• At the media timeout (4:04), the Golden Eagles held a 24-20 edge on the scoreboard.
• Marquette used a 10-0 run to take a 34-20 lead with 15-seconds remaining in the half.
• The Friars' Kyra Spiwak (Arlington Heights, Ill.) converted a traditional three-point play with five-seconds on the clock to make it a 34-23 game, but Marquette added one more point at the foul line to close the half (35-23).
• The Golden Eagles out-scored the Friars 24-7 in the second quarter on 71.4-percent shooting from the field (10-14).
• Providence committed 10 turnovers in the first 20 minutes of action and was outscored 13-0 in points off of turnovers.
• Baskerville and Williams combined to score 14 of the Friars' 23 first-half points, while Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) hauled in six rebounds.
 
THIRD QUARTER:
• Marquette came out of the gates to score seven-straight points for a 42-23 lead, forcing a Providence timeout.
• The Friars only managed to get within 14 of the Golden Eagles in the quarter.
• The Golden Eagles outscored the Friars 30-18 in the frame, marking the second-most points Providence has given up in a single-quarter this season. Seton Hall scored 31 against Providence in the second quarter on Jan. 19.
 
FOURTH QUARTER:
• The Friars were outscored 20-14 in the final 10 minutes of play, allowing Marquette to maintain a comfortable lead for the remainder of the contest.
• Six different Friars cracked the scoring column in the fourth quarter, with no one accumulating more than three points.
• The Golden Eagles also had six players score in the final frame, with Camryn Taylor leading the way with six points. 
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Providence used an all-sophomore starting line-up to begin the game, featuring Baskerville, Geary, Earlette Scott (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Kaela Webb (Pontiac, Mich.) and Sophia Widmeyer (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia). It marked Widmeyer's first career start.
• Spiwak appeared in her first game since Jan. 11 vs. Creighton and finished with 10 points. It marked her first double-digit scoring game since Dec. 16 at Utah (10 points).
• Baskerville paced the Friars with 11 points, while Williams joined Spiwak with 10 points.
• Geary hauled in a team-high six rebounds.
• Marquette scored 28 points off of 19 Providence turnovers, while only committing seven miscues of its own.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars remain on the road to face No. 11/12 DePaul on Sunday, Feb. 2 at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Ill. The game is scheduled to tip off at 2:00 p.m. (ET) and will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN).
