Friars Defeat Xavier In BIG EAST Action, 60-48

Earlette Scott recorded a career-high 20 points to lead three Friars in double figures.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Xavier, 60-48, on Jan. 26 in Providence, R.I. The Friars improved to 10-11 on the season and 1-8 in BIG EAST play. The Musketeers dropped to 2-18 overall (1-8 BIG EAST). Sophomore Earlette Scott (Brooklyn, N.Y.) paced the Friars with a career-high 20 points, including 11-13 from the charity stripe.
 
FIRST QUARTER:      
• Both teams struggled to find the bottom of the net prior to the first media timeout, as the score was tied, 4-4. Providence shot 2-7 (29-percent) and Xavier was 1-7 (14-percent) from the field to start.
• Providence suffered a scoring drought of over five minutes to end the quarter. Xavier took a 9-4 lead into the break.
 
SECOND QUARTER:
• Xavier led by as many as 10 in the quarter (20-10) but Scott converted a traditional three-point play to cut the deficit to single digits.
• The Musketeers took a 22-15 lead into halftime.
Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) led Providence with four points.
Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) recorded three points, six rebounds, two blocked shots and one steal.
• Providence shot 30-percent (6-20) from the field compared to Xavier's 22.9-percent (8-35).
• Xavier converted Providence's 14 turnovers into 10 points during the opening 20 minutes.
 
THIRD QUARTER:
• Providence struck first in the second half with a Baskerville lay-up off a Kaela Webb (Pontiac, Mich.), bringing the Friars within five.
• Xavier got the lead back up to eight, but Providence went on a 12-0 run in just under five minutes of play. The Friars hit five-straight field goals during the run to take the lead for the first time since 7:21 remaining in the first quarter. Scott fueled the run with eight points.
• Providence got its first double-digit lead of the game after Scott hit two free throws with 46-seconds left in the quarter, 38-28.
• Providence dominated the third quarter, 23-9, and took a seven-point lead into the final frame, 38-31.
• Scott had 10 points in the quarter on 3-5 shooting from the field and a 3-4 performance from the foul line.
• Geary contributed six points on 3-5 shooting, to go along with three rebounds and two assists.
• Providence held Xavier to 3-12 shooting from the field (25-percent).
• The Friars shot 52.9-percent (9-17), including 33.3-percent (2-6) from three and 50-percent (3-6) from the line on the quarter.
 
FOURTH QUARTER:
• Xavier cut the Friars' lead to five on two occasions during the quarter, but it proved to be as close as the Musketeers would get the rest of the way.
• A timely three pointer by Webb from the top of the arc gave the Friars a double-digit lead with 3:05 left in the quarter.
• Webb had tallied 10 of her 12 points in the fourth quarter.
• Providence out-scored the Musketeers, 22-17, in the fourth quarter for a 60-48 victory.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Scott led all scorers with a career-high 20 points, including 11-13 shooting from the foul line. She also matched her career high on the glass with eight rebounds.
• Geary finished with 14 points on 6-11 shooting with eight rebounds.
• Webb was the third Friar in double figures, with 12 points on 4-7 shooting and 2-3 from deep.
• Baskerville checked in with a team-high 11 rebounds and six points.
• Providence has won five-straight games against Xavier.
• Providence shot 41.3-percent (19-46) from the field, including 38.5-percent (5-13) from deep. The Friars also hit 17-25 free throws on the day, matching their season high for makes at the stripe.
• The Friars won the rebounding battle, 41-39.

WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars return to action with a pair of road games next weekend at Marquette and No. 11/12 DePaul. Providence faces the Golden Eagles on Friday, Jan. 31 at the Al McGuire Center in Milwaukee, Wis. at 8:00 p.m. (ET). The Friars close the weekend with the nationally-ranked Blue Demons on Sunday, Feb. 2 at Wintrust Arena in Chicago, Ill. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m. (ET).
