Butler Holds Off Friars For a 50-47 Victory

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women's basketball team fell to the Butler Bulldogs 50-47 on Friday, Jan. 24 at Alumni Hall. The Friars dropped to 9-11 overall and 0-8 in BIG EAST play. The Bulldogs improved to 13-6 on the season and 5-3 in the league. Earlette Scott (Brooklyn, N.Y.) paced the Friars with 13 points on 5-7 shooting.
 
FIRST QUARTER:
• The Bulldogs held a 13-6 lead after 10 minutes of action.
• The Friars shot just 18-percent from the field (2-11), while Butler converted 33-percent of their shot attempts (4-12).
 
SECOND QUARTER:
• Providence used an 8-0 run to take a 16-15 lead, capped by back-to-back three-pointers from Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) and Kaela Webb (Pontiac, Mich.).
• Kristen Spolyar hit a three for Butler with 3:51 on the clock to end a four-minute scoring drought.
• Spolyar's bucket sparked a 10-4 run for the Bulldogs to finish the quarter.
• Butler took a 25-20 lead into the break at halftime.
• Geary led all scorers for the Friars with seven points and added six rebounds and two assists.
• Providence shot 42-percent in the second quarter (5-12), while the Bulldogs dipped to 29-percent (5-17).
 
THIRD QUARTER:
Hevynne Bristow (Brooklyn, N.Y.) got the Friars on the board first to begin the third quarter, but Butler responded with a quick 5-0 spurt to take a 30-22 lead.
• Bristow paced the Friars with four points during the frame.
• Baskerville grabbed a team-high four rebounds in the quarter.
• Providence out-scored Butler 12-11 during the third to get within four (36-32) heading into the final 10 minutes.
 
FOURTH QUARTER:
• A 9-0 run by Butler late in the fourth quarter provided a 47-40 advantage on the scoreboard.
• Baskerville halted the run at 2:36 with a free throw (47-41).
• Scott followed with a fast-break lay-up and then a three-pointer to make it a one-point game (47-46).
• The Friars' 6-0 run forced a timeout with 1:10 on the clock.
• Butler received a timely bucket from Naira Caceres to push the lead to three (49-46)
• Providence had the ball with six seconds remaining but were unable to get off a shot.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Geary notched her first career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 10 rebounds.
• Baskerville had a game-high 12 rebounds to go with nine point and three blocks.
• Scott led the Friars scoring with 13 points on 5-7 shooting from the field.
• Turnovers plagued the Friars (26), which the Bulldogs converted into 22 points.
• Providence won the rebounding battle, 46-35.
• Providence shot 37-percent (17-46) from the field, 31.6-percent (6-19) from deep and 58.3-percent (7-12) from the line.
 
WHAT'S NEXT:
• The Friars return to action on Sunday, Jan. 26 against BIG EAST foe Xavier at 1:00 p.m. The game will be played at Alumni Hall in Providence, R.I. and will be nationally televised on FS2.
