OMAHA, Neb. – The Providence College men's basketball team fell short to the No. 25 Creighton Bluejays, 78-74, on Saturday, Jan. 18 in Omaha, Neb. The Friars record falls to 11-8 on the season and 4-2 in BIG EAST play.
David Duke (Providence, R.I.) dominated offensively scoring a career high 36 points. He shot 12-18 from the field and 6-8 from three. This was the first 30 point performance from a PC player since December of 2017.
Nate Watson (Portsmouth, Va.) scored the opening basket for the Friars in the paint. Duke knocked down a basket from beyond the arc to open three-point scoring for Providence. They had the lead 11-8 going into the first media timeout.
The Friars continued to shoot well from downtown, adding field goals from
Greg Gantt (Fayetteville, N.C.) and
Luwane Pipkins (Chicago, Ill.). The Bluejays struggled in the paint to start, missing three consecutive layups. Providence took advantage of their size and scoring off turnovers.
Maliek White (Richmond, Va.) nailed Providence's fifth three of the first half to put them up 26-25 with just over seven minutes to play. Creighton went cold, not scoring a field goal in the last five minutes. The Bluejays broke the drought with just under three minutes in the first with a basket by Denzel Mahoney. Pipkins scored his second three of the night late in the first half. Creighton answered immediately with one of their own on the following possession.
The teams headed into halftime with 41-37 Bluejay lead. Providence shot 12-34 (35.3%) from the field, 6-17 (35.3%) from three-point land and 7-8 (87.5%) from the free throw line. Creighton shot 12-27 (44.4%) from the field, 5-9 (55.6%) from three and 12-13 (92.3%) from the line.
Duke got the Frias going in the second half making consecutive field goals on a jump shot and layup on the fast break. Both teams struggled finding the bottom of the net with neither making a field goal in over three minutes. Creighton had turned the ball over four times. Pipkins ended the cold streak hitting a three-point jumper. Creighton led 49-48 with 12:39 on the clock.
Providence regained the lead on an
Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) jump shot. Not long after Diallo struck again in the paint followed by Duke's third three of the afternoon. The Friars led 57-53.
Both teams traded baskets over the next few possessions. Duke got hot, scoring the Friars last 13 points starting with 5:44 on the clock. Nine of those points came from threes. Friars had the lead 74-69 with 1:41 on the clock.
Ty-Shon Alexander scored the next five points for Creighton to tie the score up at 74. With 36 seconds on the clock the Friars had the ball but turned it over. Marcus Zegarowski scored the game winning three-pointer to put the Bluejays up 77-74 with 3.2 seconds on the clock. The game ended with a 9-0 Creighton run.
Providence finished 25-64 (39.1%) from the field, 11-28 (39.3%) from three and 13-18 from the free throw line. Creighton ended with 25-52 (48.1%) from the field, 8-16 (50.0%) and 20-25 (80.0%) from the line. Ty-Shon Alexander led the Bluejays offensively with 24 points and three rebounds.
Up next, the Friars stay on the road to take on the Seton Hall Pirates on Wednesday, Jan 22. The game is set for tip-off at 8:30 p.m. and will be broadcasted on FS1.
