South Orange, N.J. – The Providence College men's basketball team fell to the No. 10 Seton Hall Pirates, 73-64, on Wednesday, Jan. 22 in South Orange, N.J. The Friars' record dropped to 11-9 on the season and 4-3 in BIG EAST play.
Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) and
Nate Watson (Portsmouth, Va.) both finished in double-digit scoring. Diallo contributed with thirteen points, eight rebounds and three assists. Watson had 10 points and four rebounds. He shot 4-6 from the field.
David Duke (Providence, R.I.) got the Friars on the board after two minutes of play. He was fouled on a deep two and was able to convert at the free throw line. Duke ended with nine points and five assists on the night. Seton Hall had the early lead, 8-4, going into the first media timeout of the half.
Kalif Young (Vaughan, Ontario) entered the game and immediately made an impact in the front court. He finished with eight points and six boards.
A.J. Reeves (Roxbury, Mass.) found his rhythm knocking down two three-point baskets. The Pirates' could not be stopped in the paint; eight of their nine field goals had come from down low. With just under eight minutes to play, the Pirates held their lead 24-19.
With seven minutes on the clock, Providence went on an 8-0 run led by an
Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) second chance layup. The Friars took the lead 27-26. Diallo knocked down his first three of the night followed by a
Maliek White (Richmond, Va.) layup. Seton Hall finished out the half strong scoring the last six points to put them on top.
Going into the locker room the Pirates had the lead 36-32. Providence shot 12-30 (40.0%) from the field, 4-16 (25.0%) from three-point land and 4-5 (80.0%) from the line. Seton Hall was 14-23 (60.9%) from the field, 2-9 (22.2%) from three and 6-12 (50.0%) from the free throw line. Out of the Pirates 36 points, 24 were scored in the point.
Watson opened the second half for the Friars on a put back dunk. Providence made their next six points in the paint. They cut their deficit to three with the score at 46-43.
Both teams traded baskets back and forth through the next media timeout. The Friars hung around keeping it at a two-possession game. Points from Young and
Luwane Pipkins (Chicago, Ill.) kept the Friars in the game. Seton Hall stayed dominant around the rim and making second chance baskets.
Providence went cold not scoring a field goal in the last four minutes. Duke ended the drought on a jump shot with 3:42 on the clock. Seton Hall had the lead 67-58. Back-to-back field goals by Watson gave the Friars life with just over two minutes to play. The last-minute spark was not enough. Seton Hall was able to hold on to secure the win.
The Friars finished off shooting 23-64 (35.9%) from the field, 4-24 (16.7%) from three and 14-16 (87.5% from the line. The Pirates were 26-45 (57.8%) from the field, 3-13 (23.1%) from beyond the arc and 18-25 (72.0%) from the line. Romero Gill led Seton Hall with 17 points, six rebounds and eight blocks.
Up next, Providence returns home to host the No. 9 Villanova Wildcats on Saturday, Jan. 25. The game is set to start at 1:00 p.m. at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. and will be televised on CBS.
