PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Following a USNWT Trial held from Jan. 6 to 8 at Spooky Nook in Lancaster, Pa., the U.S. Women's National Team High Performance Staff has announced the members of the 2020 U.S. Women's National Development Team. Providence College field hockey Assistant Coach
Kellie Joyce is among the list of 23 athletes who were selected.
The U.S. Women's National Development Team accounts for the transitional phase between the U-21 USWNT and the senior USWNT. Several of the trial attendees recently completed their final college season and are no longer permitted to be on the junior team due to age restrictions.
Joyce recently completed her second season as an assistant coach with the Providence College field hockey program. The Friars have qualified for the BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship during each of her two seasons on staff. Prior to her tenure at Providence College, she served as an assistant coach at New Hampshire in 2017, following an impressive playing career with the Wildcats from 2011-14.
Joyce earned Longstreth/NFHCA Third-Team All-America honors as a senior in 2014. During her career, she also was a three-time America East All-Conference selection (2012-14) and was tabbed an NFHCA All-Northeast Region First-Team honoree (2014). She also excelled in the classroom, earning America East Academic Honor Roll and NFHCA All-Academic Squad recognition.
Upon completion of her collegiate career, Joyce trained with the U.S. Women's National Team in 2015, during which time she traveled to England to compete in a four-game series. She was a member of the U.S. Development Team until 2017, marking her first stint on the roster.
Joyce's playing career also extended overseas, where she was a member of the Royal Pungouin Hockey Club's elite team in Nivelles, Belgium from Aug. 2016 through Apr. 2017. In May, Joyce was named to the 2019-20 U.S. Women's National Indoor Team.
The U.S. Women's National Development Team is currently scheduled for two training camps in the coming months. The first will be held Feb. 28 to Mar. 2 in Berkeley, Calif., and the second is set from Mar. 27-29 in Chapel Hill and Durham, N.C. The team will then tour Scotland in their first international competition of the year from April 16-22.
