Cooley will be inducted on Friday, Nov. 1.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – It was announced on September 19 that Providence College men's basketball Head Coach Ed Cooley will be inducted into the Stonehill College Athletic Hall of Fame on Friday, November 1.
Cooley joins men's basketball player Jamal Gomes '95, men's ice hockey player Butch Santosuosso '90, women's lacrosse player Carissa Medeiros '03 and the 1999 Women's Soccer Team as inductees to Stonehill's 31st Athletic Hall of Fame class.
"This is a tremendous honor and I am flattered to be recognized by the College," Cooley said. "I have so many fond memories of my time at Stonehill. I am so appreciative of all the opportunties that attending Stonehill has enabled me to have in my life."
Cooley, a product of Central High School in Providence, was a member of the men's basketball program at Stonehill between 1989 and 1994, serving as team captain for three seasons. He finished his career with 795 points, 594 rebounds and over 100 assists in 107 career games. Cooley helped Stonehill to four Northeast-10 Tournament appearances, reaching the semifinals his senior year, when he finished seventh among Northeast-10 Conference leaders with 7.0 rebounds per game.
In eight seasons as the head coach at Providence, Cooley has posted a 162-110 mark (.598). In 13 seasons as a head coach overall, Cooley has a 254-179 mark (.586). He has led the Friars to seven-straight post-season appearances, including a school-record five-straight trips to the NCAA Tournament. It marks the first time Providence has reached the post season seven-consecutive times since Dave Gavitt's Friars accomplished the feat from 1970-71 to 1977-78 (eight-straight seasons).
In 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, Cooley guided the team to the NCAA Tournament. In 2014, Cooley engineered the Friars' BIG EAST Championship run after finishing in fourth place in the regular-season standings with a 10-8 record. The Friars went on to defeat St. John's, Seton Hall and Creighton to win the program's second BIG EAST title and first since 1994.
When Cooley was hired in 2011, the Friars had finished under .500 in six of the 10 previous seasons and had been to just one NCAA Tournament (2004) in that 10-year span. Cooley has posted 20-or-more wins in five of his eight seasons with the program and has recorded at least 10 victories in BIG EAST regular-season play five times.
In August of 2019, Cooley served as the Head Coach of Team USA at the Pan Am Games in Lima, Peru. His squad was a group of BIG EAST All-Stars, including Alpha Diallo, Nate Watson, David Duke and AJ Reeves. Despite having the youngest team at the tournament, Cooley led the squad to a Bronze Medal.
"I know Ed is very flattered by this honor and we are proud of him," Providence College Athletics Director Bob Driscoll stated. "Ed loves teaching and his passion for teaching, coaching and helping people began at Stonehill College."
The induction ceremony will be held on Friday, November 1, inside the Petit Atrium at the Shields Science Center. The event starts with a cocktail reception at 6 p.m., with dinner at 7 p.m., and the induction ceremony to follow.
