PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Five Providence College athletic teams have earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards for scoring in the top 10% of their respective sports in Academic Progress Rate (APR).Â
For the sixth-straight year, the women's swimming and diving team earned the honor, while the women's tennis team was recognized for the fifth-consecutive season. The women's basketball program earned its first-ever NCAA Public Recognition Award and the Friar women's cross country and track teams returned to the list of honorees for the first time since 2012-13. The Friars have now had multiple teams honored in all 14 years that the NCAA has given out the Public Recognition Awards.
The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 academic years.
The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in every sport. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
