DURHAM, N.H.- The Providence College men's cross-country team captured its first win of the season at the UNH Tri Meet behind
Marcelo Rocha's (Peabody, Mass.) first-place finish. The Friar women's team placed third. The men recorded 19 points and claimed 10 out of the 11 top spots. Individually, the Friar women finished one and two, paced by senior
Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.) and junior
Maria Coffin (Annapolis, Md.). The PC women's team finished the day with 45 points.
On the men's 5 kilometers race, five out of six Friars were in the lead pack. Rocha and
Marcus Karamanolis (Wellington, New Zealand) led the pack in the first lap and a half. After the second lap, Rocha began to separate himself. Throughout the whole duration of the race, the Friars had eight men in the top 15. With 1000 meters left, University of New Hampshire runner Nicolas Sevilla-Connelly passed Rocha to take the lead late. With 300 meters to go on the track, Rocha out kicked him to secure his first victory (15:03.12). After Rocha and Sevilla-Connelly, it was all Friars. The Friars claimed the next nine spots and an opening meet victory.
Rounding out the scoring for the Friars were junior
Ryan Gallagher (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.), sophomore
Marcus Kemp (Kitchener, Ontario) and senior
Peter Rindfuss — they crossed the line third (15:19.12), fourth (15:24.04) and fifth (15:35.76), respectively.
For the women's 5km race, two-time All-American Wheeler claimed her second consecutive UNH Tri Meet victory (17:31.02) with teammate Coffin finishing in second (17:52.39). Wheeler and Coffin took the lead from the gun and held it for the first two loops. On the third loop, Wheeler began to break away from Coffin. As the race progressed, Wheeler opened up the gap to finish first and Coffin behind her, finishing second. Freshman
Orla O'Connor (Waterford, Ireland) finished 10th (18:57.91). The women finished in third place.
The Friars will be back in action on Friday, September 20th at Franklin Park for the Coast-To-Coast Battle in Beantown, hosted by Boston College.
