PROVIDENCE, R.I.-Â Due to the impending storm Hurricane Dorian, that is set to hit San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Puerto Rico Volleyball Clásico has been cancelled. The Providence College volleyball team will now begin its 2019 season at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. on September 1. The Friars will be playing two matches against East Carolina (2:00 p.m.) and George Mason (5:00 p.m.).
SCOUTING THE FRIARS:Â The Friars ended the 2018 season with an overall record of 8-21 and a 2-16 record in the BIG EAST Conference. Providence claimed the 14
thAnnual Friar Volleyball Classic title in the midst of a season-best five-match win streak.Â

The Friars will be returning 10 players along with eight newcomers. Providence will be led by seniors
Addison Root (Wichita, Kan.),
Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.), junior
Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) and sophomore
Mackenzie Taylor (Holbrook, N.Y.). The 2017 Second-Team All-BIG EAST selection Root returns for her final year after finishing first on the team in service aces (25), second on the team in kill (316) and fourth in digs (202). Alderson comes into the year after finishing third in kills (249), and digs (237). Barber had a successful sophomore year after being named Most Valuable Player of the 14
thAnnual Friar Volleyball Classic, and earned BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on August 4. She finished first in assists (1,032) and second on the team in digs (250). Taylor looks to build off her successful freshman campaign as she was first on the team in digs (444) and second on the team in assists (70). She was also named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on September 4 and named to the UMKC Kangaroo Classic All-Tournament Team.

SCOUTING THE PIRATES:Â The East Carolina University Pirates finished their 2018 season with a record of 13-16 and a 5-13 mark in the American Athletic Conference.

The Pirates return their top two attackers in juniors Bri Wood (237) and Sydney Kleinmann (234) along with their assist leader, fellow junior Shelby Martin (836). Martin was also named to the 2018 American Athletic Conference Second Team for the second-straight year after earning 2017 American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year.

SCOUTING THE PATRIOTS:Â The George Mason University Patriots finished their 2018 season with a 10-15 overall record and an 8-6 mark in the Atlantic-10 Conference record.

The Patriots return their top four players in Atlantic 10 Second Team All-Conference senior Bailey Williams, who led the team in kills (228), junior Emily Konchan, who led the team in assists (895) and sophomores ShaLi Niu, who was second on the team in kills (226) and Peyton Ehmke, who ranked first on the team in blocks per set (1.07).

WHAT'S NEXT:Â The Providence College volleyball team will return for its home opener against the newly division one Merrimack College Warriors on Wednesday, September 4 at 6:00 p.m. at Alumni Hall.
