8/13/2019 10:59:00 AM | Swimming and Diving

The Friars swimming and diving teams announce their schedules and captains for the 2019-20 season.

Providence College swimming and diving Head Coach John O'Neill released the program's 2019-20 schedule. The schedule features four home meets at Taylor Natatorium in Providence, R.I., and the program's annual winter training trip to Ponce, Puerto Rico. The two programs will officially open the 2019-2020 season at the New England Catholic Invitational, held in Newton, Mass. on Oct. 4-5.

Throughout the season, Providence College will seek to qualify as many student-athletes as possible for the BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships on Feb. 26-29 at the Nassau County Aquatic Center in East Meadow, N.Y.  Last season the Friars saw more than 50 athletes qualify for BIG EAST Championship competition.

Other news includes Coach O'Neill's announcement of the captains for the upcoming 2019-2020 season. Rising seniors Erin Boyle and CJ McCartin, along with PK Brannigan and Chris Centrella, were elected by their teammates to represent and lead the women's and men's programs, respectively.

Boyle is from Bayport, NY and is an accounting major at the Providence College School of Business. Specializing in sprint freestyle for the Friars, Boyle has been a consistent contributor and had college best times at the 2019 BIG EAST Championships in both the 100 and 200 freestyles.

McCartin, a Coral Springs, FL native, is an English and political science double-major. She has been a consistent contributor for the Friars in sprint freestyle and butterfly both individually and on relays. McCartin is also a representative for the women's team on the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC).

Brannigan hails from Darien, CT and is an accounting major at the Providence College School of Business. Brannigan has broken a number of school records and, with one season remaining, is currently the eleventh all-time leading point scorer in the history of the men's program. His point total quantifies his role as a constant force for the Friars in sprint freestyle and on relays.

Centrella is a quantitative economics major from Brielle, NJ. Centrella specializes in breaststroke and has established himself as a consistent contributor in the 100 and 200 breaststroke events throughout his career at Providence College. His individual events and relay splits will be key to the Friar breaststroke lineup in the 2019-2020 season.

The Friars will also expand their staff this season with the addition of Andie Rigas '19 as graduate assistant coach. A mainstay of the Friars butterfly and individual medley groups during her four-year career, Andie completed an outstanding four-year career with the Friars. She earned Big East All-Academic Team awards every year as a student-athlete and, in 2018, Rigas was awarded the program's Clara Walker Award as its most improved athlete. After graduating with the class of 2019 with a Bachelor of Science in Health Policy and Management, Rigas will be pursuing her Master's in Business Administration while working with the program.
