PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College and the National Grid Foundation traveled to DelSesto Middle School in Providence, R.I. on Wednesday (May 29) to recognize this year's Hoops for the Stars Essay Contest Winner.

The city-wide essay contest encompasses all of the elementary and middle schools in Providence. This year's winner was Luca Simeoni.

Simeoni and his classmates were treated to a presentation by Providence College Head Women's Basketball Coach Jim Crowley and 2019 BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, Mary Baskerville as well as Assistant Men's Basketball Coach Ivan Thomas and Junior center Nate Watson. The message from the coaches and student-athletes centered on the importance of working hard and always believing in yourself.

"Today's assembly was a perfect example of the impact that the National Grid Foundation Hoops for the Stars Program has on the students of Providence. The student-athletes and coaches at Providence College serve as role models for the students and their presence at DelSesto Middle School today gives the students the opportunity to get to know them away from the bright lights of the basketball court," said Ed White, Executive Director of the National Grid Foundation.

The National Grid Foundation Hoops for the Stars Program is a partnership with Providence College to provide Providence city schools with tickets to Friar men's and women's basketball games. Students have the opportunity to earn the tickets as a reward for excellence in the classroom and the community.  In its 11th season, the Hoops for the Stars Program has become engrained in the curriculum of Providence schools and students and teachers alike look forward to the games every season.
