NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Providence College men's and women's track & field teams competed in the first day of the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships on Friday, May 10.
The highlight of the day for the Friars was Brianna Ilarda's (Perth, Western Australia) performance in the 3,000 meter steeplechase. Ilarda took the race from the gun and never looked back. She would go on to take the victory in a time of 9:56.36, finishing 26 seconds ahead of the second place finisher. This was Ilarda's third Big EAST steeplechase title in her career.
Millie Paladino (Morgantown, W. Va.) had a strong performance in the 1,500 meter prelims. It was a tactical race from the start and Paladino positioned herself perfectly in second. With two laps to go Paladino took the lead and began to surge. It would come down to the final 100 meters between her and a Butler runner. Paladino would go on to finish second in a time of 4:33.99 qualifying for the finals tomorrow at 12:10p.m.
On the men's side,
Michael Wyman (Marion, Mass.),
Michael O'Leary (St. James, N.Y.) and
Angus White (New Plymouth, New Zealand) all competed in the 1,500 meter prelims. Both heats were tactical till the end. Wyman would go on to finish third (3:53.52) in his heat and automatically qualify for the finals. White and O'Leary would each place fifth in their respective heats and qualify for the final on time. The finals of the men's 1,500 will start at 12:18 p.m.
Jack Carleo (Newburryport, Mass.) had a solid performance in the 800 meter prelims. Carleo positioned himself in the middle of the pack throughout the majority of the race. With 200 meters to go Carleo would kick to the finish to place third in his heat in a time of 1:50.98. This was a personal best for Carleo. His time qualified for him for the final tomorrow at 1:20p.m.
