NEW YORK, N.Y. –The BIG EAST announced its weekly track and field awards on Monday, April 1. Senior Brianna Ilarda (Perth, Western Australia) was named the Women's BIG EAST Track Athlete of the Week for her performance at the Stanford Invitational on Friday, Mar. 29. Sophomore
Chris Shanahan (Westwood, Mass.) was named the Men's BIG EAST Field Athlete of the Week for his performance at Raleigh Relays on Saturday, March 30.
Ilarda won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the Stanford Invitational, becoming the first Providence College woman to win gold at the annual meet in Palo Alto. The senior posted a time of 9:50.42, running a six-second personal best. Ilarda's time is currently ranked first in the NCAA for this season.
Shanahan broke the Providence College school record in the javelin on Saturday at the Raleigh Relays. The sophomore recorded a throw of 61.64 meters to place fifth overall. Shanahan is ranked second in the BIG EAST this season and 42
nd on the NCAA East Regional list.
The Providence College men's and women's teams will be back in action on Friday, April 12 to host the Ocean State Invitational in Providence, R.I. Events will begin at 4:55 p.m.
