PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's and women's swimming and diving teams announced their 2018-19 season award winners during their 35
thannual end-of-the-year banquet on Sunday, April 14.
The Luciani Award was awarded to senior
Juliet McGlaughlin (West Chester, PA.) Named for Cindi Luciani '91, this award honors the women's most valuable student-athlete in dual and championship meet competition as voted by team members and coaching staff.  In dual meet competition, McGlaughlin was as a consistent force for the Friars and scored in the backstroke and butterfly events. At the 2019 Big East Championships, she helped the Friars to an outstanding meet scoring in the 100 and 200 backstroke, the 100 butterfly and the backstroke legs of both record-setting 200 and 400 Medley relays.
Freshman
Justin Viotto (Morristown, NJ) was honored with the Bowden Award. The award is named for Horace Bowden '89, this award honors the men's Most Valuable Student-Athlete in dual and championship meet competition, as voted by the coaching staff and team members. Viotto exploded onto the scene in his freshman year by leading the Friars in team scoring for the 2018-2019 season with 262.5 points. He was named a Big East Swimmer of the Week in November 2018, after setting school records in the 200 butterfly and 400 individual medley at the Harold Anderson Invitational. At the BIG EAST Championships, Viotto lowered both of these records, as well as scored for the Friars in the 500 freestyle, 400 individual medley and 200 butterfly, and was part of the record-setting 800 freestyle relay.Â
Viotto and fellow freshman Jennie Bankes (Boxford, MA) were named winners of the O'Neill Family Award. Created in 2008 and named for Head Coach
John O'Neill, the O'Neill Family Award honors the most valuable male and female freshmen athletes in meet competitions, as voted on by the team and coaching staff.  Bankes had an immediate impact for the Friars in the freestyle events, competing in both the sprint and middle distances. Her performances at the BIG EAST Championships were marked by legs on the record-setting 200 freestyle and 400 medley relays, as well as the 100, 200 and 500 freestyle and a leg on the 800 freestyle relay. Viotto is only the third simultaneous recipient in program history of both the Bowden and O'Neill Family awards.
Junior
Amanda Gaccione (Secaucus, NJ) was recognized with the Clara Lamore Walker Award, while sophomore
Andrew Ferrell (Atlanta, GA) earned recognition with the Jan and Brian Larkin Award. These awards recognize the female and male athletes who have improved the most during the season, as voted on by the team and coaching staff. Gaccione battled injury and illness over her sophomore season to emerge as the Friars' Breaststroke standout in her junior year, culminating in lifetime best performances in the 100 and 200 distances and a stunning school record in the 200 breaststroke at the 2019 BIG EAST Championship. Ferrell's development in butterfly, individual medley and freestyle events became the backbone to the Friar lineup this season. He posted lifetime bests while scoring in the 200 individual medley and 100 and 200 butterflies at the 2019 BIG EAST Championships, setting new school records in the 100 butterfly and 200 IM, as well as provided a leg to the team's 200 and 400 medley relays and the record-setting 800 freestyle relay.
Senior
Sarah Rehak (Topsfield, MA) was recognized with the Sears Diving Award. This award, named for Patrick Sears '88 and Kevin Sears '93, honors the athlete who makes an outstanding contribution to the sport of diving at Providence College. Rehak, formerly a gymnast, capped her career by qualifying and competing in the 1 meter diving event at the 2019 BIG EAST Championships.Â
Seniors
Mackenzie Coughlin (Darien, CT) and
Ryan Trammell (Lake Mary, FL) were honored with the David Hardy Coach's Award. Named for David Hardy '89, this award honors the male and female student-athletes who exhibit those qualities which Hardy brought to the swimming and diving team: loyalty, dedication, good sportsmanship and outstanding effort in the pool and in the classroom. Coughlin has acted as the Friars' butterfly and individual medley stalwart throughout her career, and she scored in the 200 butterfly at the 2019 BIG EAST Championships as well as competed in the 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley. Trammell capped off an outstanding career by lowering his school record in the 200 breaststroke at the 2019 BIG EAST Championship, competing as only the second Friar in history to qualify for the 2018 ATT Winter National Swimming Championship and continuing his tremendous efforts as a leader in Providence's breaststroke and butterfly events. His performances at the 2019 BIG EAST Championship included scoring in the 100 breaststroke, competing in the 100 butterfly and contributing a leg on the  200 and 400 medley relays.
