3/1/2019 10:07:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Jovana Nogic paced the Friars with 17 points.
PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The Providence College women's basketball team fell to No. 24 DePaul, 76-61, on March 1 in Providence, R.I.  The Friars dropped to 16-13 on the season (8-9 BIG EAST), while the Blue Demons improved to 22-7 (13-4 BIG EAST).
Â
The Friars finished the first quarter with a 7-0 run to get within 17-15 at the break.  Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) opened the second quarter with a short jumper in the key to tie the game (17-17), but DePaul answered with a 10-0 scoring spurt and mounted a 27-17 lead.  Providence got back within seven (28-21) before both teams went silent from the field for nearly three minutes of action.  A pair of Maya Stovall free throws lifted the lid for DePaul, and the Blue Demons followed with back-to-back buckets to go ahead by 13.  Freshman Kaela Webb (Pontiac, Mich.) closed the half with a three-point bucket to make it a 10-point game at the half (34-24).
Â
Providence out-scored DePaul, 24-19, in the third quarter as Maddie Jolin (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Jovana Nogic (Belgrade, Serbia) combined for 17 points.  The Friars were within single-digits for much of the quarter, until DePaul pushed out to a 50-40 advantage with 2:32 on the clock.  Providence finished the frame with an 8-3 scoring spurt to get within 53-48 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Â
Nogic opened the fourth with a short jumper to inch within three points, and remained within striking distance (61-56) at the 7:48 mark. However, DePaul used a 12-0 run over the next 2:30 to take a 73-56 lead with 4:26 remaining en route to the 76-61 victory.
Â
DePaul feasted off of 23 Providence miscues during the game, to post a 34-11 advantage in points off of turnovers.  The Friars held a 31-30 edge on the glass.  It marked their first loss of the season when out-rebounding or securing the same number of rebounds as their opponent. Â
Â
Providence shot 48-percent from the field (24-50), while DePaul checked in at 43.9-percent (25-57). The Blue Demons were +5 at the free throw line and also hit 14 three-point buckets, compared to the Friars' four triples on the night.
Â
Nogic led the Friars with 17 points, while Jolin chipped in 14 points.  Freshman Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) contributed 13 points on 6-7 shooting and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.

Â
