PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Hockey East Association announced its weekly awards on Monday (Feb. 18). Providence College's
Hayden Hawkey (Parker, Colo.) earned Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week honors and
Tyce Thompson (Milford, Conn.) was named the Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week.
Hawkey reached another milestone on Friday night, earning his program record 65
th win in the Friars' 6-1 win at UMass Lowell. On Saturday, he pitched his 15
th career shutout and NCAA-leading seventh shutout of the season in Providence's 1-0 win over the River Hawks. For the weekend, Hawkey posted a 0.50 GAA and .976 save percentage, stopping 41-of-42 shots he faced. It is the second weekly award for Hawkey this season, having earned Hockey East Player of the Week honors on Jan. 28.
Thompson earns his first career weekly award after tallying two goals over the weekend. After chipping in with a goal on Friday night, Thompson accounted for the lone goal of the game in the Friars' 1-0 win over UMass Lowell on Saturday night. It was the second time this season that Thompson has scored in back-to-back games and he now has totaled six goals and 11 assists in 2018-19.
The Friars are back in action on Saturday (Feb. 23) against nationally-ranked UMass. Puck drop is slated for 5 p.m. at Schneider Arena.
