PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Paulo Lima (Lisbon, Portugal),
Tiago Mendonca (Faro, Portugal) and
Joao Serrano (Evora, Portugal) of the Providence College men's soccer team were named to the United Soccer Coaches All-East Region Second Team today (Dec. 9).
Lima started in 22 games this season for the Friars and logged 1,922 minutes in the midfield. He led the team in goals, with eight, and accumulated 18 points overall. The sophomore recorded career bests in goals, assists (two) and points. Lima was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll twice during the season on Oct. 28 and Nov. 4. At the conclusion of the regular season, he was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team and BIG EAST All-Tournament Team.
Mendonca started all 23 games for Providence and logged 1,907 minutes. The midfielder ended the season with 12 points on four goals and a career-high four assists. At the beginning of the season, the red-shirt senior was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. He was then named to the All-BIG EAST First Team and BIG EAST All-Tournament Team to finish out the season.
Serrano led the team in assists (nine), recorded four goals and had 17 points. Each of his offensive totals marked career highs. The defender started 22 games for the Friars and played 1,954 minutes in the backline. Serrano was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Sept. 2, Sept. 16 and Sept. 23. He was also named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Nov. 8. To conclude the season, he was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team.
The Providence College men's soccer team finished the 2019 season with a record of 16-7-0 overall, including a 6-3-0 in conference play. The Friars entered the BIG EAST Tournament as the No. 3 seed and reached the Championship game, where they fell to Georgetown, 3-1. Providence advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 10th time in program history and made it to the Third Round for the third time. The Friars' 16 wins tied the program's single-season record for victories.
