Three players were in double-digit scoring for the Friars.

KINGSTON, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team was defeated by the Rhode Island Rams, 75-61, on Friday, December 6 at the Ryan Center in Kingston, R.I. The Friars fell to 5-5 on the season, while the Rams advanced to 6-3. Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) led the Friars in scoring, with 13 points, as well as four rebounds.

Senior Kalif Young (Vaughan, Ontario) scored the first two baskets of the game for the Friars. Young had a presence in the paint early, and he finished with nine points and nine rebounds in the game.

A three-pointer by Diallo put the Friars up by three points with 11:25 remaining in the half. A few minutes later, with 8:43 left in the half, Emmitt Holt (Rochester, N.Y.) banked in a three-pointer to make the lead 21-18.

URI's Fatts Russell made a layup with 6:53 left in the first to give the Rams a one-point lead. The Friars would regain the lead at 24-22 on the next possession with a David Duke (Providence, R.I.) three-pointer. Duke finished with 12 points in the game.

A 12-0 run by URI, which lasted nearly three minutes, extended the Rams lead all the way up to 10 points with 3:24. A jumper by freshman Greg Gantt (Fayetteville, N.C.) out of a timeout ended the Friars scoring drought. The teams headed into their locker rooms at halftime with a 38-29 URI lead. Providence shot 11-32 (34.4%) from the field and 4-11 (36.4%) from beyond the arc. Rhode Island was 12-35 (34.3%) and 2-10 (20%) from three.

Early in the second half, Diallo made a second-chance layup to cut the URI lead to eight heading into a media timeout. A quick 8-0 run by the Friars would make it only a 44-41 URI lead. Nate Watson (Portsmouth, Va.) continued to put together another major performance as the second half progressed, finishing with 10 points total and six rebounds.

In a mainly back-and-forth second half, the Friars cut the URI lead to two points with under seven minutes left in the game. However, an eventual fastbreak three-pointer by Fatts Russell extended the Rams' lead back to 62-55. The Rams continued to fight, and another Russell three-pointer with under three minutes left brought URI's lead to 15.

The Friars brought it back to a 12-point deficit off of an and-one by Diallo with under three minutes left, but they were unable to hold off URI's red-hot offense in the final minutes. Rams stars Cyril Langevin and Fatts Russell put up a combined 41 points.

The Friars ended going 25-65 (38.5%), 5-17 (29.4%) and 6-12 (50%) from the line on the evening. The Rams were 26-63 (41.3%), 7-20 (35.0%) and 16-27 (59.3%) from the line.

In the next game, the Friars will take on the Stony Brook Seawolves at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Saturday, December 14. The game starts at 8:00 p.m. ET and will be broadcast live on FS1.
