Women's Basketball Hangs On To Defeat LMU, 48-45

Friars conclude non-conference play with a 9-3 record.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Providence College women's basketball team defeated Loyola Marymount, 48-45, in the final game of the Lobo Invitational on Dec. 20 in Albuquerque, N.M. The Friars head home from their Southwest swing, 2-2, and conclude non-conference play with a 9-3 overall record.
 
FIRST QUARTER:
• LMU got out to an 11-0 lead, which forced a Providence timeout with 5:33 on the clock.
• Coming out of the break, Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) hit a runner in the paint, which sparked a 13-2 run to close the quarter.
• The run tied the game, 13-13, at the break.
• Earlette Scott (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Friars with four points in the opening 10 minutes. 
 
SECOND QUARTER:
• LMU's Ciera Ellington was assessed a technical foul with 4:56 remaining on the clock, sending Kyra Spiwak (Arlington Heights, Ill.) to the line for two free throws.
• Spiwak converted the foul shots, giving Providence its first lead of the game, 20-18.
• Loyola Marymount took a slim, 23-22, advantage into the locker room at halftime.
• Williams paced six Friars in the scoring column with six points.
• Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn) added four points and eight rebounds.
• Nine of the Friars' 22 points in the half came from the free throw line, having converted 9-of-11 attempts at the stripe (.818)
 
THIRD QUARTER:
• Friars started the third quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 29-23 lead with 7:15 showing on the clock.
• Kaela Webb (Pontiac, Mich.) started the run with five-straight points, marking her first buckets of the game.
• The Friars extended the run (10-2) on a baseline three-pointer by Spiwak at 6:39 to lead 32-25.
• LMU cut the deficit to one (33-32) with 2:10 on the clock, using a 7-1 run.
• Williams drained a pair of free throws for the Friars with 1:01 remaining in the frame to put PC on top (35-32).
• The Lions cut the Friars' lead to 35-34 on two free throws with five seconds left in the quarter. 
 
FOURTH QUARTER:
• The Lions scored four-straight points to start the frame to take a 38-35 lead.
• Williams and Scott answered with back-to-back lay-ups to help Providence regain the lead (39-38).
• Providence extended its lead to 44-40, but the Lions hit a three to get within one. 
• Moments later, LMU went to the line with a chance to take the lead, but missed both free-throw attempts with 2:06 left in the game.
• On the Friars' next possession, Williams got to the rim for a reverse that rimmed out and Andrea Cooper (Edmond, Okla.) hauled in the offensive rebound in traffic forcing Head Coach Jim Crowley to use a timeout. 
• Williams scored a huge bucket in the paint for Providence with 50-seconds left to give the Friars a 46-45 lead. 
• Webb hauled in a defensive board on the other end and was fouled with 28-seconds remaining. She hit one of two foul shots to put Providence ahead, 47-45.
• Baskerville had a chance at a steal on the next defensive stand, but LMU called a timeout. 
• On the following play, Baskerville got a chance at a steal once again, and this time came up with it. 
• Baskerville gave the ball up to Webb, who was fouled and went to the line and made one of two attempts to make the score 48-45.
• Providence held strong on defense in the final seconds, lifting the Friars to the three-point victory.
 
NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Williams finished with a team-high 11 points.
• Baskerville recorded nine points and a game-high 12 rebounds, narrowly missing out on her third double-double of the season.
• Scott and Webb each added eight points, while Olivia Orlando (Georgetown, Mass.) chipped in six rebounds and three assists.
• Providence finished its Southwest road trip with a 2-2 record.
• The Friars conclude non-conference play with a 9-3 overall record, marking the most regular-season non-conference wins under Jim Crowley.
 
WHAT'S NEXT: Providence will open BIG EAST Conference play at Villanova on Sunday, Dec. 29. Tip-off is set for 4:00 p.m. at Finneran Pavilion in Villanova, Pa. The game will be televised on FS1. The Friars will remain on the road to close out the New Year against Georgetown on Tuesday, Dec. 31 at 1:00 p.m. The game will be played at McDonough Arena in Washington, D.C.
