PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's soccer team finished the 2019 season with a record of 16-7-0 overall and 6-3-0 in BIG EAST play. The Friars entered the BIG EAST Tournament as the No. 3 seed and reached the Championship game for the fifth time in program history. Providence advanced to the final 16 in the NCAA Tournament before losing to Clemson in overtime. They ended the season with a No. 14 ranking in the United Soccer Coaches Poll, No. 12 in NCAA RPI and a No. 11 ranking from TopDrawer Soccer.
Providence hosted sixth-seeded Marquette in the BIG EAST First Round game on Nov. 9. The Friars prevailed 3-0 and moved on to face No. 2 seed St. John's on Nov. 13. Providence topped St. John's, 2-1, on the road with both goals coming in the second half. The Friars made it to the Championship and faced eventual NCAA Champion Georgetown for the title on Nov. 17. Providence was defeated 3-1.
Paulo Lima (Lisbon, Portugal),
Tiago Mendonca (Faro, Portugal), and
Esben Wolf (Copenhagen, Denmark) were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Friars made their 10th overall appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Friars hosted NJIT in the First Round game on Nov. 21. The Friars prevailed with a 3-0 win, which marked their 11th shutout of the season. This tied the program record for shutouts in a single season. Providence moved on to face the No. 15 seed Penn State on Nov. 24. The Friars sealed a 3-2 comeback victory in overtime advancing them to the Sweet Sixteen for the third time in program history. PC traveled to the No. 2 seed Clemson on Dec. 1. The Friars ended their tournament run in a 2-1 double overtime loss.
Providence defeated two nationally-ranked opponents during the season. The Friars ended their regular season with a 2-0 victory against then-No. 8 St. John's (Nov. 6). They defeated the Johnnies again just a week later (Nov. 13) in the Semifinal of the BIG EAST Tournament, 2-1, when they were ranked No. 14. Finally, Providence topped No. 13 Penn State, 3-2, in overtime in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament (Nov. 24).
PC went on a six-game unbeaten streak near the end of the season with four wins in conference play and two in the BIG EAST Tournament. Providence picked up a 2-0 win at Villanova (Oct. 23), a 3-2 overtime win over Creighton (Oct. 26), a 2-1 victory at Xavier (Nov. 2), a 2-0 shutout win over No. 8 St. John's (Nov. 6), a 3-0 victory against Marquette in the First Round of the BIG EAST Tournament (Nov. 9) and a 2-1 win at St. John's in the Semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament (Nov. 13).
Several Friars were recognized for their efforts by the BIG EAST during the 2019 season.
Tiago Mendonca and
Joao Serrano (Evora, Portugal) were named to the All-BIG EAST First Team.
Paulo Lima picked up Second Team Honors, while
Austin Aviza (Medway, Mass.) and
Danny Griffin (Wethersfield, Conn.) were named to the All-BIG EAST Third Team.

Tiago Mendonca and
Joao Serrano were all named to the United Soccer Coaches All-East Region Second Team. Serrano also received recognition for his academics being named to the United Soccer Coaches Men's Division I Scholar All-East Region First Team.
Trevor Davock (Medway, Mass.) led the team offensively with six goals and eight assists for 20 total points.
Paulo Lima led the team in goals (8) while adding two assists to give him 18 total points. Serrano led the team in assists with nine.
Esben Wolf and
Davis Smith (Amherst, Mass.) both scored five goals while
Tiago Mendonca tallied four for the Friars. Davock and Smith had four game winners while Lima notched three. Redshirt senior
Austin Aviza played all 23 games in net for the Friars. He put together a 16-7-0 record with a 1.00 goals against average, a .709 save percentage and eleven shutouts.
Overall, the Friars played in four overtime games this season. Providence finished 3-1-0 in extra time. The Friars did not tie a single game all season which has not happened since the 2016 season when they went 15-7. Additionally, 13 of the team's 23 games were decided by just one goal. Nine of those 13 games resulted in wins for Providence.
Providence offensively had a number of stats that were ranked in the top 20 nationally. They were No. 6 in shots per game (16.65), No. 12 in assists per game (2.09), No. 14 in corner kicks per game (6.39) and No. 19 in total goals (41). Defensively the Friars were No. 16 in shutout percentage with .478.
