11/8/2019 12:49:00 PM | Field Hockey

Friars conclude their season with a 12-7 overall record.

HAMDEN, CONN.– The No. 4 seed Providence College field hockey team fell to top-seeded and third-ranked Connecticut, 2-0, on Nov. 8 in the BIG EAST Semifinal hosted by Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn. The Friars conclude their season with a 12-7 overall record, while the Huskies improved to 17-3 overall.

• The Friars and Huskies played a scoreless first quarter. Connecticut led in shots, 5-0, and penalty corners, 3-0.

• At the 12:47 mark of the second quarter, Providence nearly took the lead as Mary O'Reilly (Longmeadow, Mass.) caused a Connecticut turnover just outside the circle. She carried the ball into the right side and fired a shot to the far post. Izzy Mendez (Cedar Grove, N.J.) deflected the ball into the cage, but was called for a foul as the ball hit her foot.

• With under a minute to play, UConn's Maddy Wray was alone in the middle of the circle with the Friars' goalkeeper out of position. However, Wray was unable to put a clean strike on the ball.

• The two teams went to halftime tied, 0-0.

• UConn took a 1-0 lead with 11:12 remaining in the third quarter as Antonia Tiedtke collected a rebound off the goalkeeper on a penalty corner and found the back of the cage.

• The Friars entered the fourth quarter trailing 1-0.

• Connecticut took a 2-0 lead in the 50thminute as Wray tallied a goal in transition off a feed from Svea Boker.
