ANAHEIM, Calif. – The Providence College men's basketball team was defeated by Long Beach State, 66-65, at the Wooden Legacy on Thursday, Nov. 28 in Anaheim, Calif. Two Friars scored in double digits.
Luwane Pipkins (Chicago, Ill.) led the Providence scoring with 12 points, six rebounds and five assists. Pipkins contributed early in the first half to get the Friars up. He shot 4-13 from the field.
Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) led the team in rebounds with nine along with 11 points, four assists, and five steals.
David Duke (Providence, R.I.) contributed with nine points,
Emmitt Holt (Rochester, N.Y.) with eight points, and
Maliek White (Richmond, Va.) with seven.
Long Beach made the opening buckets of the night to put them up four early. The Friars started a 12-0 scoring run 2:12 into the game starting with a three ball made by
Emmitt Holt. LBSU ended its scoring drought after 5:48 of play on two quick baskets. The score was 16-8 with 11:30 on the clock.
Duke got the Friars going with an alleyoop dunk from Pipkins coming out of a Friars timeout with 10:13 on the clock. The Friars extended their lead to eight (27-19) on back to back Diallo field goals. Long Beach State went could not find a shot at the end of the first.
At the half the Friars took the lead going into the locker room (37-28). The Friars were 15-31 (48.4%) from the field and 5-12 (41.7%) from behind the arc. LBSU was 12-29 (41.4%) and 1-6 (16.7%) from three.
Long Beach State called a timeout a 1:20 into the second half of play after the Friars extended its lead to 44-30. Diallo sparked the Friars on a slam followed quickly by a Duke three from the left wing.
Kalif Young (Vaughan, Ontario) contributed with a dunk to give the Friars a 17 point lead.
Providence went on a shooting drought missing seven field goals starting with 16:19 left in the second half. Long Beach State took advantage of the friars in inability to score and went on a 10-0 run to make the score 49-42.

A.J. Reeves (Roxbury, Mass.) three from the outside right gave the Friars their first field goal in just under five minutes. White followed with a dunk off the fast break to give them control. Not long after the LBSU scored six straight points in just under 1:30.
Both teams struggled getting the ball in the net late in the second half. The Friars did not register a field goal in the final seven minutes of the game. Providence had an eight-point lead with 3:54 to go (62-54). LBS ended the scoring drought on a made shot in the paint followed by a layup off a PC turnover to decrease their deficit to four with 1:48 left. The Friars had five turnovers in just over five minutes.
Chance Hunter fouled out with 1:48 left, which sent Duke to the line for a pair. Duke converted on both but LBSU was able to knock down a jumper to keep it a two possession game. The Friars turnover turned into a three point ball for Long Beach State to make the score 64-63.
With 0:49 on the clock, Drew Cobb was called for a technical foul for flopping which sent Pipkins to the line for a foul shot that he made (65-63). The Friars turned the ball over to give LBSU a shot at the lead. Duke had the rebound on the missed shot which he dished out to Diallo. With 17 seconds remaining Diallo was fouled and sent to the line. He missed the front end of a 1 of 1. LBSU took a took a three from the outside right that Holt fouled, sending Michael Carter III to the line. He made all three to give Long Beach State a one point lead with three seconds on the clock. Duke got a shot off but could not finish the play giving Long Beach the win.
The Friars went 25-60 (41.7%) from the field, 8-24 (33.3%) from three point land, and 7-11 (63.6%) from the line. Long Beach State was 25-53 (47.2%) from the field, 2-10 (20%) from three, and 14-23 (60.9%) from the line. Michael Carter III led the team with 23 points and three assists. Chance Hunter and Joshua Morgan were also in double digits.
