Four Friars score in double figures to lift Providence to victory.
PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The Providence College women's basketball team defeated UMass Lowell, 63-38, on Nov. 24 at Alumni Hall. Four Friars reached double figures in the victory, as Providence improved to 5-0. The River Hawks dropped to 0-6 on the season.
FIRST QUARTER:
• The Friars scored six-straight points to the start the game and led 13-4 with 1:06 remaining on the clock.
• Providence led 16-7 at the break, as Chanell Williams (Bronx, N.Y.) paced the offense with seven points.
• The Friars shot just 29.4-percent from the field in the opening quarter. The River Hawks converted 3-15 attempts from the floor (.200).
SECOND QUARTER:
• UMass Lowell cut the deficit to five (18-13) in the second quarter, but a three-pointer from Kaela Webb (Pontiac, Mich.) and an up-and-under from Alyssa Geary (Elmhurst, Ill.) on the left block gave Providence a 23-13 advantage.
• The River Hawks outscored the Friars 14-11 in the second quarter and recorded a 14-8 advantage on the boards.
• Providence took a 27-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.
• Williams paced the offense with nine points and Webb added eight points.
• Geary contributed seven points, four rebounds and four blocked shots in the opening 20 minutes.
• Ren'Cia Rolling netted 10 points for the River Hawks, while Denise Solis hauled in eight boards.
• The Friars committed just three turnovers in the first half, compared to nine miscues by UMass Lowell.
THIRD QUARTER:
• An 8-1 run over a span of 4:08 gave Providence a 35-24 lead at the media timeout (4:59).
• The run extended to 14-3, capped by three-consecutive triples by Spiwak, Earlette Scott (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Webb to put the Friars on top 41-24.
• The Friars shot 4-4 from beyond the three-point arc in the quarter.
• Providence took a 43-29 lead into the final 10 minutes of play.
FOURTH QUARTER:
• Providence controlled the fourth quarter from start to finish, outscoring the River Hawks, 20-9.
• The Friars got the lead to 21 (56-35) with 3:04 left and held a 7-3 scoring edge down the stretch.
GAME NOTES / HIGHLIGHTS:
• Four Friars scored in double figures on the night paced by Williams' 12 points. Williams also added four rebounds and a game-high four assists.
• Geary finished the game with 11 points, five rebounds and four blocked shots. She hit 5-10 field-goal attempts.
• Webb contributed 11 points, two rebounds, two assists and two steals. She has scored in double figures in each of the Friars' five games.
• Scott tallied a season-high 10 points and chipped in four boards, two assists, one blocked shot and one steal. She was 3-5 from the field, including 2-3 from three-point territory.
• Scott's two triples were the first of her career. She was previously 0-7 from three-point land.
• Providence shot 4-15 from beyond the arc in the first half (.267). The Friars shot a blistering 7-9 from deep in the second half (.778) to finish the night 11-24 overall (.458).
• The Friars' 11 threes marked a season high.
• The River Hawks held a 44-33 advantage on the glass.
• Defensively, Providence held UMass Lowell to single digits in the scoring column in three of four quarters.
WHAT'S NEXT:
Providence will travel to New Haven, Conn. on Tuesday, Dec. 3 to complete the final 20 minutes of play against Yale. The two teams met on Nov. 5 in the 2019-20 season opener, but the game was suspended at halftime due to a clock/scoreboard malfunction. The Friars and Bulldogs will resume play at 5:00 p.m. with 10:00 minutes on the clock in the third quarter. Providence College was leading the game, 42-33, at halftime.
