PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College men's basketball team was defeated by the Pennsylvania Quakers 81-75, on Saturday, Nov. 23 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. The Friars' record fell to 4-2 overall on the season.
Maliek White (Richmond, Va.) recorded a career high in points scored with 20.
Maliek White led the Friars with 20 points, three assists and two steals. He shot 3 -7 from three.
Alpha Diallo (New York, N.Y.) scored the opening basket of the night to put the Friars up first. He ended the game with 16 points, eight rebounds and three assists. He shot 7-12 from the field.
Luwane Pipkins (Chicago, Ill.) contributed with a team high in assists (7) and scored 14 points.
Emmitt Holt (Rochester, N.Y.) was the final Friar in double digit scoring with 10 points, six rebounds and two blocks.
Penn started the half out hot, going four for four in their last field goal attempts starting with 16:24 on the clock. Max Martz made a three pointer to extend the lead to nine with 12:45 left.
With 12:01 on the clock, White made the first PC three of the night followed by a second one 30 seconds later. The Friars went on a run and decreased the Penn lead to four (24-20). An
Emmitt Holt block turned into a fast break layup for White down the other end. Penn called the first timeout of the game.
Penn's Ryan Betley made back to back threes coming out of the timeout. The Quakers scored 21 points from beyond the arc in the first half. Pipkins answered back with his second field goal of the night to make the score 30-22 with 8:19 left in the first.
White stopped the shooting drought for the Friars on a three with 1:23 on the clock. This was the first field goal for PC in 6:56 minutes.
Providence went into the locker room with a 17 point deficit. The Qaukers shot 50% from three point land in the first half and had 13 assists on 19 made field goals. The Friars were 11-30 (36.7%).
Starting the second half, Holt sparked a 10-0 run for the Friars on reverse slam from Pipkins. The score was 51-40 going into the first media time out. The Quakers had four turnovers to start the half. Penn ended the run on a made layup on a fast break to make the score 53-43.
Greg Gantt (Fayetteville, N.C.) started another run for the Friars with 11:38 left in the second half. Gantt slammed it home on a fast break which was quickly followed by a Pipkins three pointer.
Nate Watson (Portsmouth, Va.) contributed with two back to back to baskets. The Friars got the score within six (58-52).
With 7:39 on the clock, the Quakers made back to back three pointers to extend their lead back to 12. Providence was not able to answer. In the last 45 seconds of play the Friars brought it within six again on a Duke layup and Holt three pointer but Penn was able to keep the lead.
Providence shot 29-70 (41.4%) from the field, 7-18 (38.9%) from three, and 10-20 (50%) from the line on the game. The Friars had 42 rebounds and 16 assists as a team. Penn shot 30-57 (52.6%) and 11-22 (50%) from three point land. Ryan Betley scored the most points on the night with 22 and had eight rebounds. Jordan Dingle had 19 points and AJ Brodeur was the final Quaker in double digits with 17.
Up next, the Friars head to Anaheim, Calif. For the Wooden Legacy. Providence will take on Long Beach State at 2:00 p.m. ET on Thursday, Nov. 28 in the first round of the tournament. The game will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
