Cross-Country Heads To Wisconsin For BIG EAST Championships

The men’s 8k race will begin at noon ET and the women’s 6k is set for 12:50 p.m. ET.

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The Providence College men's and women's cross-country teams travel to Kenosha, Wis. for the BIG EAST Championships on Saturday, Nov. 2. The men's 8k race will begin at 12:00 p.m. ET and the women's 6k at 12:50 p.m. ET. The BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) will be live streaming both races on YouTube, Twitter and Caffeine TV. The coverage of the race begins at 11:55 a.m. ET.
 
The men's cross-country team will race for its fourth win of the season. The Friar men have won the UNH Tri Meet, New England Championships and CCSU Mini Meet. Leading the men will be Michael O'Leary (St. James, N.Y.) and Marcelo Rocha (Peabody, Mass.). O'Leary is coming off of a fourth-place finish (24:50) at the New England Championships. Rocha earned BIG EAST Male Athlete of the Week after his first collegiate victory at the UNH Tri Meet (15:03.12). Rocha placed fifth in his most recent race at the New England Championships (24:54). The Friar men have won 15 BIG EAST Championships dating back to 1979. Their most recent championship came in 2006.
 
Leading the pack for the Friar women will be Abbey Wheeler (Elmira, N.Y.) and Maria Coffin (Annapolis, Md.). Wheeler has placed first at the UNH Tri Meet (17:31.02) and repeated as champion at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown (17:03). In a field with 17 nationally-ranked teams at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, Wheeler finished 26th(20:28.1). Wheeler has earned BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week twice this season (Sept. 25, Oct. 22).
 
Coffin placed second at the UNH Tri Meet (17:52.39), 12th at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown (17:40) and 60th at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational (20:53.5). Coffin improved her time by six seconds at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational from last season. Since 1982, the women have won eight BIG EAST Championships. Their most recent championship came in 2016. 
 
Following the BIG EAST Championships, both teams will head to Buffalo, N.Y. on Nov. 15 for the NCAA Northeast Championships.
