Men’s Soccer Defeats Creighton, 3-2, In Overtime

PROVIDENCE, R.I.  – The Providence College men's soccer team captured a 3-2 win over Creighton this Saturday, Oct. 26 on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. Paulo Lima scored the golden goal in the 98th minute of play.

GAME FLOW & NOTES
- Creighton took the lead in the eighth minute. A foul on Paulo Lima (Lisbon, Portugal) gave the Bluejays a free kick just outside the 18-yard box. Yudai Tashiro converted on the kick and put Creighton up 1-0.
- In the 42nd minute the Friars were able to find the equalizer and knot the game at one goal apiece. Gil Santos (Parede, Portugal) created some space off the defender and sent the ball into center of the 18-yard box where Roman scored off a header into dead center net. This was Roman's first goal of the season.
- The Friars gave themselves a 2-1 lead in the 81st minute on a Davis Smith (Amherst, Mass.) goal. Santos was able to beat the defender and pass the ball to Tiago Mendonca (Faro, Portugal) in the six-yard box. Mendonca gave the ball back where Santos handed it off to Smith who took the final touch into the net.
- In the 85th minute Creighton tied the game at 2-2 on a free kick. Yudai Tashiro scored his second goal in the game off a free kick opportunity.
- In overtime, Lima scored the golden goal in the 98th minute to give Providence the win. Smith dished the ball inside the box to Lima who scored on a side volley into lower left of the net.
- Smith scored his fourth goal of the season.
- Santos recorded two assists on the night.
- The Friars outshot the Bluejays 25-7 and held the advantage in corner kicks 13-1.

1-0 (CU) 7:48/1st – Yudai Tashiro – Tashiro scored off a free kick right outside the 18 yard line.
1-1 (PC) 41:35/1st – Christopher Roman (Santos) – Santos crossed the ball into the box where Roman scored off a header.
2-1 (PC) 80:11/2nd – Davis Smith (Santos, Mendonca) – Quick ball movement inside the goal area led to Smith getting the final touch and scoring in the lower right of the net.
2-2 (CU) 84:49/2nd – Yudai Tashiro – Tashiro scored on free kick on the edge of the 18 yard line.
3-2 (PC) – 97:34/OT – Paulo Lima (Smith) – Smith passed the ball into Lima who controlled the ball off his body to then side volley into the net.
