Men’s Soccer Visits DePaul

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's soccer team will travel to DePaul University this Saturday, Oct. 19 for its first of two upcoming away games. The match is set for kick-off at 4:00 p.m. (ET) on Wish Field in Chicago, Ill.

Scouting the Blue Demons
DePaul recently tied with Butler (Oct. 12), 2-2, in double overtime to move its record to 4-5-3 on the season and 0-1-3 in conference play. On Friday, Oct. 4 the Blue Demons tied with Georgetown, 0-0, in double overtime. They previously lost to Notre Dame on the road, 1-0, on Tuesday, Oct. 1, which was their final non-conference match of the season. Nine players have accumulated points for DePaul. Max De Bruijne leads the squad in points (nine) with three goals and three assists. Jake Fuderer tallied two goals and four assists for eight points. Zach El-Shafei and Youssef Ramadan round out the top half with five points each. In net, Drew Nuelle has started each game for the Blue Demons.
 
Scouting the Friars 
The Friars are in the midst of a two-game winning streak. They recently defeated Marquette, 2-0, at home to improve their league play to 2-2 and their overall record to 8-4-0. Esben Wolf (Copenhagen, Denmark) scored his first career goal in the 58th minute. On Tuesday, Oct. 8 the Friars took down New England Rival UConn, 2-1, in overtime. Trevor Davock (Medway, Mass.) scored the golden goal, which marked his third goal of the season. Previously, they lost to Butler, 3-1, on Oct. 4. The Friars took on No. 2 Georgetown for their second BIG EAST game of the season and fell short, 2-1. Previously, Providence was coming off a four-game win streak at home including wins over Brown, 1-0, and Seton Hall, 1-0, in their BIG EAST home-opener of the season.  On Wednesday, Sept. 25 Ramzi Qawasmy scored the game winning goal in the 77th minute, which marked his first career goal. On Friday, Sept. 20 Paulo Lima (Lisbon, Portugal) scored the game-winning goal in the 26th minute on a header from Joao Serrano (Evora, Portugal) against Seton Hall . On Monday, Sept. 16 the Friars had a 1-0 win over Harvard University. Tiago Mendonca (Faro, Portugal) scored the game winning goal in the 21st minute from Davis Smith (Amherst, Mass.) and Andualem Chisholm (Attleboro, Mass.). On Saturday, Sept. 14 the Friars defeated Sacred Heart, 4-0. Four different players scored for the Friars. Smith scored his second goal of the year on a header and has tallied seven points on the season. Kevin Vang (Cranston, R.I.) scored his first career goal to put the Friars ahead, 4-0.
 
Serrano leads the team in points with 11 on four goals and three assists. Smith is not far behind with nine points from three goals and three assists. Davock has tallied eight points on three goals and two assists. Chisholm has recorded seven points on the season. Wolf has accumulated six points with three assists and a goal. In goal, Austin Aviza (Medway, Mass.) has started every game for the Friars. He has a 0.86 goals against average and a .714 save percentage.
 
Stacking Up Against the BIG EAST
Providence is currently ranked third in the BIG EAST standings (2-2) after playing four games. They are first in the league in shots taken with 211, which is an average of 17.6 shots per game. They are also first in corner kicks (77). Austin Aviza is ranked second in the league in shutouts and Davis Smith and third in game winning goals with three.
 
Fresh Friar Faces
Providence's roster welcomes eight newcomers to the squad for the 2019 season. Four of the nine have seen action for the Friars. Transfers, Trevor Davock and Davis Smith have both started for Friars and lead the team in points. Austin Aviza has started all 12 games in net and has recorded six shutouts on the season. Wolf has started every game and leads the team in assists (four). Gage Raftery (Seattle, Wash) has also seen minutes for the Friars. 
 
Outshooting Opponents
Providence has outshot its opponents 211-67 throughout the season. The Friars held the Golden Eagles to two shots in their last game.  
 
One-Goal Games
Through 12 games, eight of the Friars' contests have been decided by just one goal. Four of those seven have been wins, including the recent 2-1 victory over UConn (Oct. 8).
 
Preseason Poll and Awards 
Tiago Mendonca was voted to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team entering the 2019 season. In the coaches poll, the Friars were picked to finish third in the conference standings. Georgetown, the reigning tournament champion, was selected to finish first with nine first place votes (81 points). Creighton, who finished first in regular season play last season, was picked second (68 points). Providence (65 points), Marquette (59 points) and Xavier (44 points) round out the top half of the poll. Butler (40 points), St. John's (33 points), Seton Hall (28 points), DePaul (21 points) and Villanova (11 points) finish out the standings.
 
Up Next
The Friars stay on the road and head to Villanova on Wednesday, Oct. 23. The game is set for kick-off at 7:00 p.m. at the Higgins Soccer Complex in Villanova, Pa.
