PROVIDENCE, R.I. -  It was announced today (Oct. 18) by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame that Providence College junior forward Nate Watson (Portsmouth, Va.) was named to the 2020 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award Watch List.  The annual award recognizes the top center in Division I men's basketball.  A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates.

New to the award this season is Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies in each of the three rounds. By mid-February, the watch list of 20 players for the 2020 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award will be narrowed down to just 10. In March, five finalists will be presented to Mr. Abdul-Jabbar and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. The winner of the 2020 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award will be presented at The College Basketball Awards presented by Wendy's in Los Angeles, CA on Friday, April 10, 2020, along with the other four members of the Men's Starting Five.

Watson (Arlington, Va.) ranked first on the team in field goal percentage (59 percent), second in scoring (11.7 ppg) and second in rebounding (5.2 rpg) last season.  He recorded his first career double-double when he scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds at Boston College on December 4, 2018.  Watson tied his career high in points with 21 at Butler on February 23, 2019.  He was 8-10 from the field and grabbed five rebounds in the win.  It was the fourth time he scored 21 points in a game in 2018-19.

In August, Watson helped lead Team USA to a Bronze Medal at the Pan Am Games.

The Friars, who return all five starters, finished 2018-19 with an 18-16 mark and a 7-11 record in league play.  PC finished last season in eighth place and the squad also advanced to the NIT where it was defeated by Arkansas in the First Round. Providence will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 19 with the team's first exhibition game versus Stonehill College at 3 p.m. at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.  The Friars will open the season on Tuesday, Nov. 5 versus Sacred Heart at 7:00 p.m. on FSN.

Tickets for all Friar games can be purchased Monday-Friday at the PC Ticket Office, by calling 401-865-GO PC or online at friars.com.
