Field Hockey Breaks Into National Poll

Friars are ranked 25th in the latest Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches’ Poll.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College field hockey program is currently ranked 25th in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Division I National Coaches' Poll, released on Oct. 15.  The Friars have compiled an 8-5 overall record this season, including a 2-2 mark in the BIG EAST Conference. The squad also features an NCAA RPI of 21 in the most recent report (games played through Oct. 13).
 
The Friars are one of four teams from the BIG EAST Conference who are currently ranked in the national poll, joining No. 3 Connecticut, No. 17 Liberty and No. 19 Old Dominion.
 
Providence is coming off of a 4-1 victory against non-conference opponent New Hampshire on Oct. 13. The Friars boast veteran leadership with a roster that features two graduate students and seven seniors.  
 
Offensively, senior Izzy Mendez (Cedar Grove, N.J.) leads the way with 18 points on eight goals and two assists.  Senior Mary O'Reilly (Longmeadow, Mass.) is second among her teammates in scoring with 11 points on three goals and a team-best five assists.
 
Providence has a balanced attack, overall, as 13 players have recorded at least one point, including 11 different goal scorers. 
 
Graduate student Lydia Rice (Carle Place, N.Y.) has played 825 minutes in the cage for Providence and owns a 1.38 goals against average and a 0.729 save percentage. Rice has registered four shut-out victories this season.
 
Providence is scheduled to play four of its last five regular-season games at home on Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I. This weekend, the Friars will host BIG EAST foe Quinnipiac on Friday, Oct. 18 at 6:00 p.m. and non-conference foe Merrimack on Sunday, Oct. 20 at 1:00 p.m.
