PROVIDENCE, R.I.– The BIG EAST Conference announced its preseason awards and preseason coaches' poll on Oct. 10 at Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y. as part of the league's annual media day. Providence College sophomore forward
Mary Baskerville (Enfield, Conn.) was named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team, which is voted on by the league's coaches. Baskerville is one of just four unanimous selections, and also is the youngest honoree on the squad, joining a list of five seniors and five juniors.
Baskerville earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Year accolades at the conclusion of the 2018-19 season, in addition to a unanimous selection to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team. She is just the second player in program history to earn BIG EAST Freshman of the Year recognition, and first since Friar great Tracy Lis '92 was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Year in 1989. Baskerville also was a five-time BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, marking the most freshman of the week honors in program history.
As a rookie, Baskerville averaged 9.5 points per game and led the Friars in rebounding (7.3 rpg), blocked shots (1.5 bpg), double-doubles (six) and field-goal percentage (.580, 141-243).
She established program records for blocked shots (53) and field-goal percentage (.580) for a freshman. Additionally, her .580 field-goal percentage was the second-highest for a single-season in program history overall, trailing Elizabeth Lawlor's shooting clip of .581 (193-332) during the 1988-89 season.
Baskerville helped guide the Friars to a post-season appearance for the first time since 2010, having led the team to the WNIT Round of 16. In three WNIT games, she averaged a double-double with 16.0 points and 12.0 rebounds, in addition to posting 1.7 blocked shots per game. She scored a career-high 22 points in the First Round vs. Hartford on March 21 and followed with 20 points in Round 2 vs. Penn on March 24.
Providence College is tied with Villanova for fifth place in the 2019-20 BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll, with each tallying 44 points. DePaul was selected as the league favorite, earning nine first-place votes and 81 points overall. St. John's (70 points, 1 first-place vote), Seton Hall (58 points) and Creighton (50 points), sit just ahead of the Friars in the standings.
Last season, Providence finished the year with a 19-16 overall record and an 8-10 mark in the BIG EAST (T-6
th). The Friars' 19 victories overall are the most since the 2009-10 campaign (19-15), while their eight wins during conference action are the most since 1996-97 (8-10). It marked just the fourth time in the last 20 years that Providence has recorded six-or-more victories in league play.
The Friars entered the 2019 BIG EAST Women's Basketball Championship as the No. 7 seed and earned their first BIG EAST Tournament victory since 2001, as they defeated Xavier, 70-62, in the First Round on March 9 in Chicago, Ill.
Providence College opens the 2019-20 schedule with an exhibition game against Assumption College on Oct. 30 in Providence, R.I. The Friars will travel to New Haven, Conn. to face Yale in the season opener on Nov. 5 at 7:00 p.m. Providence will play 10 of its 12 non-conference games on the road, including two games at the Ocean State Tip-Off Tournament in Smithfield, R.I. (Dec. 7-8) and three games in the Lobo Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. (Dec. 18-20). The Friars open BIG EAST Conference action at Villanova on Dec. 29 at Finneran Pavilion in Villanova, Pa.
