PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College alumna and ESPN analyst Doris Burke Doris Burke '87, '92G, & '05Hon., was honored by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a 2018 Curt Gowdy Media Award recipient.  Burke was officially honored at the Hall of Fame Reunion Reception & Dinner on Sept. 6, which is part of the organization's enshrinement events in Springfield, Mass. (Sept. 6-8).

The Curt Gowdy Media Award is named in honor of the late Curt Gowdy, who was a legendary sports broadcaster and former Hall of Fame Board member and President.  The award is presented annually to members of the electronic and print media whose longtime efforts have made a significant contribution to the game of basketball.  Andy Bernstein, a longtime NBA photographer, will be honored in addition to Burke.

"I am truly grateful and honored to be receiving the Curt Gowdy Award," Burke said.  "I am indebted to the incredible colleagues I have been so fortunate to work alongside throughout my career.  To know that my Friar Family will be out in force, will make the evening even more special."

Burke (formerly Sable) was a member of the Providence College women's basketball team from 1983-87. Burke led the Friars in assists during three of her four seasons with the program and finished her career with 602 handouts. Burke is ranked second all-time at PC in career assists and also ranks 10th all-time in career scoring (1,372 points). She was a three-time All-BIG EAST selection, including a member of the First Team as a senior in 1987. She also was honored as a KODAK District 1 All-America selection. Burke has since been inducted into the Providence College Athletics Hall of Fame and had her jersey retired as part of the College's Friar Legends Forever Tradition.

Professionally, Burke is widely known as a pioneer in the world of television sports broadcasting. She is a versatile commentator who has worked a variety of ESPN assignments, including the NBA, women's college basketball regular-season and NCAA Championship, men's college basketball regular season and Championship Week, in addition to assignments for other ESPN properties. Since 2003, Burke has taken on additional roles and assignments for NBA coverage, and recently agreed to a multi-year contract extension, retaining her role as a full-time NBA game analyst as well as sideline reporter for the conference finals and NBA Finals.  She has been with ESPN since 1991.
