Izzy Mendez tallied the game-winning goal in the 41st minute.

AMHERST, MASS. - The Providence College field hockey team defeated Massachusetts, 1-0, on Sept. 30 in Amherst, Mass.  Junior Izzy Mendez (Cedar Grove, N.J.) tallied the game-winning goal at 40:52 to break a scoreless stalemate.  Senior goalkeeper Lydia Rice (Carle Place, N.Y.) picked up the shut-out victory in the cage with five saves.  The Friars have won four-straight games and improved to 7-5 overall.  UMass dropped to 5-7 overall.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS & NOTES
- The two teams went into halftime in a scoreless draw (0-0)
- UMass held a 4-2 advantage in shots during the first half, with shots on goal even at two apiece.  
- Junior Izzy Mendez (Cedar Grove, N.J.) got the Friars on the board at 40:52 as she sent ball into the lower right side of the cage, assisted by Natalie Mitchell (East Norriton, Pa.).
- Mendez's goal proved to be the game-winner for the second-straight match.  On Friday night, she tallied the game-winning goal in a 1-0 overtime victory against Villanova.
- Senior goalkeeper Lydia Rice (Carle Place, N.Y.) notched her fourth shutout victory of the season, and kept a clean sheet for both matches this weekend.  She collected five saves against the Minutewomen.
- The Minutewomen pulled their goalkeeper in favor of an extra field player with 4:51 remaining in the contest, but the Friars maintained control for the victory.
- UMass led in shots (9-7) and penalty corners (3-2).  The two sides were even in shots on goal (5-5).
